the wings of Pachliopta Kotzebuea look like sails of a magical ship-dense black, like velvet with a bluish tint, and tiny red heart-shaped spots sparkle underneath the hind wings.
despite its small wingspan - 70–80 mm, the kochubey sail butterfly gives the impression of a luxurious piece of jewelry.
this butterfly, part of the sail family, got its name from the commander of the Russian naval expedition, Otto von Kotsebu, who saw a charming butterfly on the Philippine islands that the locals called the "crimson velvet rose" and described it.
the bright red spots on kochubey's wings serve as a "stop" signal for birds - the butterfly is inedible.
but for humans, this beauty is completely harmless.
in home conditions, the lifespan of Pachliopta Kotzebuea is about two weeks.
