Why cid doesn't get recognized: Mainly the anime cut out that all of shadow garden wears masks on the top half of their faces and replaced it with an ominous magic effect. Also cid can alter his physique. E.g. his red eyes, but also build, face detail, voice and so on There is even more to it. But the tl;Dr is that background character a and the eminence in the shadow appear completely different
