Avatar could've easily just leaned into the fire nation being bad guys and ending it there. The fact they added in stories like these to portray the additional chaos that wars brings to a nation is pretty thoughtful. The Earth kingdom is dealing with a military occupation so of course bandits like these pop up and further harm civilians,

As Sokka said, "Jet's very smooth" but is utterly awful. XD This is one of my favorite episodes, for the solid Sokka moments, the fighting animation, and just a good showing on how the "good guys" can just be as bad.
