I started with the manga and 1999 anime and back in 2011 we weren't sure if it was gonna go all the way. It was a bad direction and the fact that they had a forced flashback when Kite was younger that wasn't even in the manga I think they knew they made a mistake. Kite gave Gon Ging's license in the very first chapter, then make it so he gave right before he dies? I was very critical of this originally but I got over it.

[Vaguely spoilery discussion] I really didn't enjoy a lot of 2011's supposedly hype episodes because I just didn't buy Gon's reactions. It was so frustrating and he seemed so out of character based on nothing. From a 2011 first watcher, Gon had only even known Kite for a week or two. That change kind of ruined it tbh. I think my reaction and enjoyment would be better if I had gotten this advice about watching the first ep of 1999, or reading the manga. It's only with subsequent rewatches that it's sunk in and I've come to accept the way he acts.

This is why the real HxH fans were telling you to watch episode 1 of the 1999 anime. Kite was the first character introduced in the series and set Gon on his path but the 2011 version changed it for some reason...

Killua definitely cares, he's risking his life and they've shown multiple scenes of him sad and worried. He's calculated and doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve like Gon does
