There's a few roles such an ear tag can provide for the Grimalkin (and/or for the crew they'r eon the ship with), ranging from translating (actually a needed thing in some cases in the setting) to tracking, to even medical aspects such as O2 monitoring and toxins detection (something useful for a species gobbling up problems in the backwarters of ships and stations!). Besides all that, you can get some tags acting a little as headsets or microphones to chat with. It could be any of these functions, or several of them... though in many cases such ear tags are little more then a fashion statement!
