They were always competent. The issue is that Ash and co learned as fast as they did which made them seem incompetent. Any time the trio did anything that did not intersect Ash and co, they are actually very successful all the way through the series.

Interesting. They will need to keep their early season competency if they don't want Tanya to kill them. Mary taught her well the dangers of an enemy that fights you multiple times and learning how you fight each time.
