If Yandere Simulator had a small town...
🕑 Added 2025-02-13 08:20:07 +0000 UTCSince 2015, there is a topic that I've periodically returned to: Would Yandere Simulator be improved if it had a small town?
Will the game feel small and clastrophobic if the player is limited to a single environment? Would a small town solve that problem? Or, would it be an unnecessary addition to the game? Could the functionality of a small town be condensed to a single street of shops?
Well, to truly make a meaningful judgement, I'd first need to prototype the concept. The creation of a huge open-world 3D environment would be quite complex, but it would have to start somewhere...specifically, with a map. So, I asked a one of the game's volunteers to help me out with that!
Above, you'll see an image of how I imagine Buraza Town. The rectangular region at the top is Akademi Academy. Directly south of that, you'll see the "residential zone" - a neighborhood with plenty of houses. Ayano, Taro, and Osana live there; it's the place you see in the background when you watch the "Senpai and Osana walk to school" cutscene. (If you look closely, you can figure out where Ayano's house is!)
The region to the west is meant to be the "wealthy side of town," where the more affluent members of Buraza Town live. Osana's stalker lives over there. It's possible that this part of town simply won't be accessible to the player, since there's not much reason for it.
The big green rectangular area in the east is a shinto shrine, which is where the player would encounter the Shrine Maiden rival if the game ever gets DLC rivals. The rectangular area above that is supposed to be a graveyard.
The grey region in the southeast is the "industrial zone." The dark-grey rectangles to the east of that are the "abandoned warehouses outside of town" mentioned a few times in the story.
The colorful region is the "commercial zone," full of shops and stores - including Amai's bakery and also the rival bakery.
The area in the north-west is the "abandoned insane asylum" featured in the 1989 befriend/betray stealth missions.
The big cyan square in the middle is a train station. The two curved lines coming out of it are train tracks.
The circle attached to the beach is a lighthouse.
If a small town really is added to Yandere Simulator, this map isn't 100% guaranteed to be the final layout of the town - but, with the creation of this map, a 3D prototype of Buraza Town can finally be created, so that this concept can be tested properly at long last!
(Don't worry; someone else is going to have the job of prototyping the town, not me. It won't take time away from development.)

If the small town does get added would you bring back the Bike so if we leave Ayano’s House we could either walk or use the bike

It sounds concerning as despite your initial intentions you may find yourself going down a rabbit hole with but if you think you can keep it mostly cosmetic then sure I would agree it would enrich the gameplay experience.

Honestly, it depends on exactly how much functionality the town is intended to have. Currently, there are some choices (go to school, go buy things from shops, go work a part-time job) that are available via a text menu. If the purpose of the small town would be to offer the exact same functionality, but make it more fun and interesting by giving the player the option of traversing a 3D environment to make those choices, then implementing the small town won't require much development time. Adding it to the game will almost be as simple as a drag-and-drop operation. If the purpose of the small town was to add dozens of new characters and features to the game, then, yeah, it would add weeks/months to development time - but that's not really my plan for the small town.

All I know is you need to make a choice on adding some kind of voice acting, polish/adjust what you have already implemented and start making videos again on YT covering everything that has happened since 1980 mode. Having custom models is a big step but this game does not need a town unless this really is going to take until the 2030s to finish

At the very least, a shot of the building she's working at is possible. The next step would be a 3D render of Ayano as a cashier or something along those lines. The next step would be real-time 3D visuals of Ayano inside of the building, performing an action. I suppose the "final form" of the feature would be an actual interactive minigame, but that's not something I feel like prioritizing right now.

The idea of being able to wander a town of the characters we grew to love would be AMAZING!! I can't wait to see where this will lead if chosen to be done! 🥰🥰 Please keep up the great work, both you and everyone involved!
