Timber Tower Patch and Resolved Timber and Plaster.
🕑 Added 2023-09-07 02:01:12 +0000 UTCEdit 9/8/23 here is the patch for the timber tower and final plaster/lattice sample. Will add to the product page as well, Hopefully this will bring some small measure of relief to people who hate painting timberframe as much as me. I think we have a standardize approach for timber and plaster instead of starting anew every time I do it. Going forward grooves will be deeper and edges will be sharper to keep thing easier on the post-process. The images below show some of the WIP views on this. Final timber will include some more micro details like knots, knot holes, bends , and joinery. It took a few tries to find a working scale for the Lattice, included sample seems to hit the sweet spot. We will use stone as well.
EDIT9/7 314: New plaster wall is on the print bed, not sure what to expect on that thatch detail yet, but render below. Have the new tower top bundled with it, I have done a sectional test but still need to run a full test before wider release. Went ahead and eliminated any exposure under the plaster since there is not really enough space for it anyways. If things go well there will probably be a mix of stone and thatch with the plaster/timber walls. I know there is some debate on weather they plastered stone or if that was done later, but visually I am fine with either as long as it comes through on the print. Plenty of times of done timber well and sometimes I've done it and fallen a bit flat. I'm not really into the timber top towers I did this month and plan a redo along with some wall expansions and new timber frame stuff for October. I realized painting it that I overworked it and that there are not any real edges to catch when painting it, also a lot of the grain washed out.
I've heard folks rave about a Lovecraft's wood grain before so I took a hard look at the depth and shape of his line cuts, timber offsets, and have tried to add a bit to it. I agree his woodgrain treatment is consistent and worth a look, we seem to go in divergent directions otherwise. I've spent the last several days messing around with effects for FDM woodgrain. I've also revisited plaster work as well and have found many samples of extremely rough and expressive surface plaster. I hope folks can chime in as they did when we developed a thatch roof texture for this brand which I still think is the best out there, 3 years later. Here is a download of my latest sample off of dropbox for you to take a look at. I've quickly painted a copy with a wide variety of paints including regular, washes, and one-coat. I like it. I guess if the scale was absolutely correct, one wouldn't actually see much of the details. So I think a bit larger details are fine.
Thanks for the comment and offer, I'll get some knots, knot holes, bends, and joinery added in there. Went ahead and expanded the list after finding some close ups on-line:)
Probably is big for sure, but I want to make sure these things paint themselves as much as possible and not wash out on the print bed. Also a lot of times there are huge splits in these old beams so we can put some visual justification on that.

The thing that is missing for me is that on the longer sections of wood there are no knots where when you look at the real buildings there is always at least one the help give a little character other than that it look really good I live in Newark on Trent where we still have a lot of these buildings I can take some pics if you want

The scale of the grain does look a bit big, but its difficult to tell from a picture.
