MMJuno's Cel shader - RetroArch - give your 3D games a cel shaded look!
🕑 Added 2018-04-05 01:50:22 +0000 UTC MMJuno has created a new shader, Cel, which dates all the way back to the Pete's OGL2 era of shaders that could be ran inside emulators like PCSX-R and ePSXe. It has now been incorporated inside Libretro/RetroArch's Common Shaders collection! We put the new shader here through its paces with a variety of 3D games ranging all the way from N64 to PlayStation1 and even Nintendo DS and 3DS.
As you can see in the video, there are a number of settings you can tweak to suit the visual look to your liking. You can combine several Cel shaders to get a more pronounced cel shaded look, and you can smooth out the look by either applying anti-aliasing as the first pass or the last pass.
Games shown in this video:
- Super Mario 64 (N64)
- Waverace 64 (N64)
- Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (N64)
- Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
- Super Mario 64 DS (DS)
- Tomb Raider (PSX)
- Crash Bandicoot (PSX)
- Wipeout (PSX)
- Tekken 3 (PSX)
- Soul Blade (PSX)
Note that the cel shaded look is highly dependent on the internal resolution of the emulator/core.
The settings I am using inside the emulators to obtain these results are as follows:
Desmume
Internal Resolution - 1024x768
Citra Canary
Internal Scale Factor - 4x
Parallel N64
Video plugin - Glide64
Internal Resolution -1280x960
Beetle PSX HW
Video plugin: GL
Internal Resolution - 4x
