Next-frame response time (≤16ms!) achievable with RetroArch! Latency with RetroArch as good as real hardware!
🕑 Added 2018-01-14 01:49:39 +0000 UTC RetroArch is truly in a league of its own when it comes to input responsiveness, and it keeps blowing away even us here at Libretro, to the degree that independent researchers start researching quite how good RetroArch can be and completely shattering several myths that have long been accepted as gospel in emulation circles:- That emulation will always have an implicit 3 to 5 frames of input lag
- That there's nothing one can do to avoid this
Well, that is all well in the past now, because as has been demonstrated right now, next-frame response time (≤16ms!) achievable with RetroArch! This means ZERO frames of input lag is achievable, indistinguishable from real hardware!
"With Pitfall, I witnessed a response on the very next frame. In the video linked above, you can clearly see me hit the button near the end of one frame, and on the next, Harry jumps! Essentially no way to improve compared to original hardware. Pack it up. We’re done here"
Whoever told you input lag was a given with emulators and that you needed FPGA in order to avoid this latency, was talking about pre-RetroArch. Post-RetroArch, latency indistinguishable from real hardware is perfectly possible!

This is amazing. Thank you retroarch team and community. You have made me excited about emulation once again.
