My impression is that Balthazar's role early in the story was as a false romantic interest for Kim, something to prop up the heteronormative fiction she was playing through, and that it was always intended to be discarded as a sham as she developed and discovered her own identity, independent of what everyone else expected her to be. The way people fall into predefined roles that society lays out for them is a constant theme underlying the comic.
