Curiosities: The Legend of Zelda Original Concept Art

I love Ocarina and its predecessors, but I'll never forgive them for pushing the franchise's aesthetic away from this weird, grungy feel. I was thinking about it, and the next time I take a crack at my Clockwork Empire project, it would be neat to try it in a style that's closer to this, with wonky lineart and some watercolor effects. What do you guys think?

Oh yes, your style combined with this harsh, unwieldy linework and this dark, dirty feeling, all in service to Zelda-related material? It is all I could ask for in life. Also, this at is absolutely gorgeous. I'd only seen the ones for the first game before now, but I think I recognise some is them from the Link's Awakening manual, which of course brings back an avalanche of memories and nostalgia...there really are few things as good as the earliest Zelda games, and this art really captures that incredibly well.

It was part of the charm, the monsters were monsters, we couldn't see it so well because 8-bit nintendo, but we knew it. We could have some imganition...iamgnition...imanigtnio...well that thing, and imagine stuff while we played. Kinda like a role-playing game tabletop, the action occurs in your head.

I love it! I only know you for Dresden Codak, so I'll look up the Clockwork Empire. I did a reverse Google Image search and found this gallery of TERADA Katsuya's art. More can also be more.

This brings me back. I, for one, would love to see your interpretation of this style. For one, it evokes echoes of Jean Giraud who you've mentioned before as an inspiration. I'd love to see what you could do with it in that vein.
