Chapter 16
Three months later, John was at the grocery store, pushing a cart full of a strange and motley assortment of items that, on first glance, didn’t seem to go together at all. Heaps of horseradish roots were stacked up against fluffed clumps of saffron; bergamot oranges tumbled over vials of frankincense, sandalwood, and chamomile essential oils; the fresh thyme, bay leaves, and rosemary looked ordinary enough, but not next to the glass containers of black salt and tinctures of St. John’s Wort. Parsnips, licorice root, fresh ginger, epsom salt, nutmeg, jasmine, charcoal, honeycomb, myrtle, juniper, cinnamon, dried asafoetida, cloves…it went on and on, and even though many of the ingredients were packaged or otherwise contained, their fragrant smells seeped through, combining to create an enchanting bouquet of aromas that was beginning to turn heads in the store.
John had been in the store for over an hour already, carefully picking out each item on the paper list he had folded up in his pocket. Every few minutes, he took it out to refresh his memory, and to cross off items he had found. It was arduous work, not least because several of the items were very difficult to locate. The shopping carts were built for normal-sized adults, but John wasn’t normal-sized…not anymore. The handle of the cart was about even with his shoulders, which made navigating the cart very difficult – and the more items he put in, the harder it was to turn corners. He had to do it slowly and deliberately, and he knew that people were watching him. He could tell, out of the corner of his eye, that several women had been on the verge of asking him if he needed any help.
But John didn’t begrudge this errand one bit. He had been the one to actually volunteer himself to go. Spending most of his time around the Kappa Gamma Delta sorority house had its perks – way more perks than drawbacks, as he was discovering every day – but one of the downsides was that John had begun to feel like he wasn’t doing anything to help out. The dozens of witches he saw every day all seemed to possess a kind of “alpha energy,” which meant that they were always on the move, making plans, and generally being proactive about every aspect of life around the house. And while his relationship with Harper was not as one-sided or “dom/sub” as many of the others, he hadn’t been able to avoid feeling like he wasn’t really pulling his weight around the house.
“Oh, but look at those little arms!” laughed Vera, once John had raised his concern earlier that day on the KGD porch. Silver bracelets sang out into the morning air as she thrust out her long, full arm in his direction, pointing her needle-like black nails at his bicep, which was fully visible in the slightly-oversized sleeveless white shirt he was wearing. “What are you, under 100 pounds now? I don’t think you need to worry about “pulling your weight,” John – there’s really not much to pull.”
Nora, who had been crouching down on the porch over a large brown toad, turned her head slightly to the side, snickering at Vera’s joke. But the toad lept abruptly to his left, and her attention was immediately redirected back downward.
“Wesan!” she hissed, and the toad stopped, stock still, where it was. She shook her waterfall of long, white hair and continued whispering to the animal. John watched, momentarily struck by what he was actually witnessing. Every day he learned more and more about the witches' customs, but he still hadn’t gotten used to most of them, least of all watching Nora actually talk to her toad. But even as he watched her, his mind jumped back to Vera’s tease, and he became self-conscious. He knew she hadn’t meant to make him feel that way, but even though he had been there for a few months, he still didn’t quite feel like he was fully part of the group, and desperately wanted to fit in and do his part.
Suddenly, he felt the warm, full thigh he was sitting on flex slightly, making his whole body rise up a couple inches. A large hand snaked down his shoulder and came to rest on his chest; John looked down and saw the deep shade of red shining up at him on those sharpened, claw-like nails. He instantly felt himself harden, and would have closed his eyes and leaned back if Vera and Nora hadn’t been there. Since there were other people around, though, John couldn’t totally melt into Harper’s embrace.
Even though they had been together for months, he still found it difficult to relax completely with Harper when they were around the other witches. Most of the other guys in the KGD house, boyfriends of the other witches, had long since let down their guards completely, and often walked around completely naked, seemingly having lost the ability to be embarrassed. As just one example, John had never seen Nora’s boyfriend, Little Bull, wear clothes. John knew that this was because that aspect of their personalities had been snuffed out, overwhelmed, swallowed – the aspect of their independence as people. It seemed like, sooner or later, this was the way the men in the KGD house went.
But John didn’t want that for himself; he resisted it. And even though he was getting more used to seeing the other guys behave so subserviently to their amazonian witch partners, he still felt uneasy whenever he witnessed it. He reminded himself that he and Harper had an understanding; they both wanted a more balanced relationship, one where John was still his own person, his own man. But the longer he remained at the KGD house, the more he realized that their arrangement was anything but the norm.
Still looking down at Harper’s sharp red nails and long fingers, John saw them beginning to gently curl up and down, and he felt his skin tent up into hundreds of pleasurable goosebumps. She had started scratching his chest, and, from the way he had felt her forearm tense against his shoulder, he knew that she was being protective of him.
“Don’t listen to her, baby,” came Harper’s slightly-humorous retort. John felt the vibrations of her words go through his body, since he was sitting on her lap. Her voice had deepened noticeably over the past few months, but that had done nothing to alter the characteristic lightness and pleasure of her voice. “There’s plenty you can do around here!”
Harper’s caressing scratches suddenly ceased, and the next thing he knew, John felt her large, warm forearm going across his chest, with her big hand wrapping around one of his upper arms while her other hand did the same behind. Glancing down, he saw her fingers slowly, deliberately going all the way around his bicep – he had gotten so small now, and she had gotten so big, that there was actually extra room for her fingers when she did this…and she did it slowly, because she knew how much John enjoyed her showing off her size. It was another way of her telling him, ‘See that? Look how much I’ve taken from you…how much pleasure I’ve given you…how many times I’ve had you, and fucked you, and swallowed your cum…’
In one smart, swift motion, Harper lifted John’s entire body up from her lap, rotating him midair, and sat him back down so that he was facing her.
