I was 13 years old in the mid-west USA at the time this show is set and had little interest in news events at the time but over the years some of the US history has seeped into my brain. I'm still ignorant of most Canadian history so I don't hold it against you for not knowing many of the references. There are some I probably don't know either. "News of the Week" magazine was made up for the show. Nora Ephron was a real person who became a well known journalist, writer and screenwriter. Her most famous movies are the rom-coms "When Harry Met Sally" and "You've Got Mail". The concert and violence at Altamont did happen. Cindy's diaphragm with hole in it is a contraceptive device still used by some women. You might look up the details online.
