John laughed at the comment. He had the intense urge to smack her ass for it, but alas, there were children present and so he did not.
They were ‘stranded’ at the Los Angeles airport. The vacation that Rave had insisted on had already been put together before John had ever heard of it. His harem knew he would agree to it and had thus not lost any time and with their money two weeks was plenty of time to get a really nice resort on the island state. However, while finding a place to stay was very simple, finding a way to get there was somewhat difficult.
Commercial flights were not exactly renowned for their reliability, at least John did not consider them to be. He was spoiled in that regard with the ready accessibility of private planes. Alas, in this case, he had no access to one. Renting one was usually an option, but there were two issues with it this time around. First was that they needed a plane for a rather sizable group, big as the harem had become, and second was that they needed it for a long trip.
The only one available on such short notice had been too small for all of them. Therefore, they would have had to take multiple flights which, to Hawaii, was quite the time investment. A few months ago, they could have avoided all of this by taking their truly private plane, but that one had sunk in the mire of the Eternal Sanctum. Taking Lydia’s plane could have been an option, but getting it over had its own set of issues. Lulu’s was obviously not an option either. It was nice enough that the empress was able to join them for this vacation in the first place.
So, with the convenient options out, they had opted for the commercial route. Direct planes from New York to Hawaii had not been available, but from New York to Los Angeles to Hawaii, that was easy enough. In theory. As with the previous set of problems, their numbers created an issue. They had to split up across multiple planes and then multiple planes created multiple fault lines.
Now, Scarlett could cheat them through all manners of problems but even she could not work the miracle of assuring several flights all went off without a delay. Thus, about a third of John’s harem was now on the way to Hawaii, the rest were still in NYC, and he and Rave had gotten stuck in the LAX airport.
“Could have probably taken the yacht,” John suggested.
“I didn’t want to get stuck on the yacht,” Rave answered. “Plus, that’s a vacation idea for another time. I have plans for this one.”
“Do you now?” John asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Ja.” Rave stuck her tongue out, then took her seat next to his. They were in a general waiting area, stuck between two airport shops that competed with each other over who could charge more abhorrent prices for low quality sandwiches and the smallest soda bottles that John had ever seen. “I arranged some stuff, you’ll see.”
“Mhm.” John hummed deeply, put a hand on her thigh, and enjoyed the feeling of her fingers scratching the back of his head. The constant chatter of people, the laughter and cries of children, the business of luggage carts, all of that was easily ignored as long as she was with him. His erudite mind all the same kept track of the march of time. “Alright, been ten minutes. Let’s see what they got for us.”
They went back to the terminal, to see if the operator had found any replacement flights for the one they had been removed from. “Just the two of you? No luggage?” the middle-aged woman asked.
“That is correct,” John confirmed.
The operator gave him a once-over. He could sense that she was adjusting her expectations in response to his looks. He was well-dressed and handsome, which he had long, long ago noticed got one preferential treatment in life. Something he had resented when he had been unattractive and that he now found himself just accepting. It had its advantages, but it felt weird.
“Alright, I’ve got something for you,” she said. “Other side of the airport, but if you hurry you should be able to get there…?” She looked at them for confirmation.
“We’re quick on our feet,” John confirmed.
“Wonderful, then let me just print this…” she tapped a couple of keys with long fingernails, “…and there you go.” She slipped the paper over once it had been spat out. “Just let the gate scan the QR code and you should be good.”
“Appreciated.” John took the paper and they departed with a friendly nod. Then it was the usual hasting through a large airport to find the correct place. They had their fair share of experience navigating airports, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. After a mere 15 minutes, they had made it over.
Of course, that kind of haste was actually unnecessary.
“Ten minute delay… so twenty minute delay,” John joked, as he and Rave sat down on the thinly cushioned seats. “Am I allowed to do some paperwork during this time?”
“Nuh-uh,” his first fiancée denied him. “You’re staying all here with me, or am I not interesting enough for you?”
“There are many accusations I could level at you, but not that one,” John responded with a smirk. He could already feel this vacation comb over his mild depression. It was difficult to stay focused on the work when he wasn’t doing it. The Mandala Sphere was currently in his inventory and the Creator Puppet sat, essentially deactivated, in the Palace. He had kept it there for the usual securities.
“What accusations are ya going to level at me?” she asked teasingly.
“To start with the obvious, we do need to finally check whether the temperature control of your brain is broken.
It was the first of December in Los Angeles. In other words, for John’s sensibilities, it was quite warm for the month, temperatures nearly reaching 20 degrees Celsius. “Some of us need to have warm blood to survive,” Rave defended herself drily.

The false disgust on her face made him laugh. They wrangled a bit, bumping shoulders and finger-wrestling, until their digits interlocked and they entered a spontaneous state of equilibrium.

“You may now board the plane!” the local worker said, causing the gathered people to stir into motion. They were corralled through the attachable bridge into the plane. John and Rave got to move through the cheap seats and to the back where things were more spacious. Money talked and they had paid quite handsomely for the business class.
It wasn’t that John couldn’t deal with crying infants and the general chatter of the regular passengers, it was that he did not want to do so on a flight across the pacific. Plus, this flight allowed the business class to close the cabin door, which they promptly did. It was not complete privacy, a standing stewardess could still look in through the open top, but it was close enough.
“No children here, right?” Rave asked in a conspiratorial whisper.
John used his elemental senses to scan through the area. He felt the warmth of human bodies in the movement of the air around them and none were small enough to qualify as children. “Nope,” he answered and gave his first fiancée a knowing smirk. “Want me to do the thing?”

The Gamer wasn’t sure what to do about that or if there even was anything he could do. “Maybe just a mild malfunction?” He did not believe in that himself.
Then the turbine burst into flames.
