The Warden’s shoulders moved up and then down. “Merely calling it as it is.”

Completely unaware of this mounting tension, Daiyu tip-toed towards the big Christmas tree. “W-what is it?” she asked.

Daiyu lifted the case up to inspect it more closely. It was made from metal, but the cover was glass, giving a view of ten rows of keys. “It’s a selection of properties all around the world,” Lu Zhi explained. “Very reclusive cottages, where no one will ever find you unless you want to be found.”
“Oh, that’s… that’s very expensive!” Daiyu pointed out.
The imperial tomboy waved off. “It was the best I could think of. I already swamp you in all the literature you could ever want. Plus, we all chipped in together.”
“It’s one gift per person,” John explained. “Otherwise, we’d drown in boxes and there would be so many duplicates.”

That was the last snipe that John could take. He suddenly whirled around and grabbed Moira by the shoulder. “We’ll be right back,” he spoke grimly and shoved the Warden towards the exit.

Those assertions hit John like glass did a brick wall. Eyebrows furrowed as he picked up the shards of those words and tried to assemble them into a picture that made sense. While he did so, Moira continued to tremble like a scared rabbit. It was as if a psychic force kept her pinned in place.
“And?” The single word finally left John’s mouth.
“And?!” Moira was between squeak and screech. All of the composure of the past hour shattered. It had been every bit as hard and every bit as brittle as ice. “I’m a champion of virtue, of justice, of the Lady’s way, I cannot be some… strumpet that… masturbates all day and… gets bred without pause like some kind of… strumpet!”

“Go to your room,” he stated. It was not a suggestion, no offer, and certainly no request – he stated it. It was the plan and he was sticking to it. “I will come to you when I think you deserve it.”
The words were every bit as harsh as he felt in that moment. He regretted them already by the time he turned away from her. What he would regret more would be to be soft on her now. He stepped back into the room, ignoring the soft thud of Moira’s derriere hitting the floor.
He closed the door without looking back.
