They were beneath the temple. Finding the passage had not been difficult. Nahoa knew the traditional constructions and John’s additional senses did the rest.
John used Observe on the skeleton, which told him fairly little. “The skeleton of a Tzitzimimeh, a mysterious species of creatures that invades across Kingdoms,” he read out. “Nothing on what a Tzitzimimeh is or where it came from.”
“Ya know, sometimes Gaia’s decisions stress me out,” Rave complained. “She decides to turn our happy serpent hunting into you discovering some other Abyssal mystery and then she doesn’t give us any of the answers.”
“For once I’m the one not stressed, then.” John inspected the skeleton from multiple angles, taking mental pictures as he went. He sent them all to Scarlett via Harem Comms. She would do a quick scan of the net if anything similar had been seen anywhere ever. Once he had finished doing that, he tore the skull off the dead monster and placed it in his inventory.
“You don’t think this is connected to your current Kingdom portals?” Moira asked.
“It could be, but it is highly unlikely.” John turned away from the skeleton. Abominable as it was, it wasn’t even in the top 100 of fucked up shit he had seen in his life. It wasn’t even close to the top 25 this month. “The visuals don’t match. Even a skeleton of these things causes the local area to turn to night. No one has reported missing suns and we got photographs of the portals.”
“Related to the Rift Spawn, then?” Rave suggested.
“Also unlikely. I fought the reanimated one that Arkeidos had under the sky, atop his fortress – the sun was there and it was day.” The Gamer shook his head. “No, what this means is that there is another faction capable of opening up ways into other Kingdoms. That’s hardly surprising. I can do it. Conditionally, but I have no reason to believe that these other things can do it unconditionally.” He stopped for a moment. “If there was an entity that could realm-travel between Kingdoms at will, that entity would be the closest one could get to Gaia, probably.”
“Unlimited resources, unlimited retreats, unlimited attacks,” Nahoa listed.
“Indeed,” John agreed. “Not to mention that someone who is capable of this must be a high level Latebloomer or an equivalent or even more powerful entity.” Chains rattled when John tested them. They were something above steel but not so much stronger that he couldn’t bend it with his bare hands. ‘I’m not that physically strong, so these creatures can’t be that impressive. Then again, who knows what kind of hierarchy there is?’
“You really think my father killed them all?” Nahoa asked.
“I suspect so,” John answered. “Did he ever mention anything of the sort?”
Nahoa thought back. “I can’t quite recall. He told many stories, but most of them were dressed up as legends.”
“It could be that this war was so easy it was not even worth retelling,” John said. “That one is hopeful. Alternatively, it was just so long before your time that he didn’t think it mattered anymore.”
Though Nahoa was old, much of that age had been spent slumbering away within the sealed vault. When she had been actively alive and running around, she had lived in an empire that had already been under Macuil’s sway for hundreds if not thousands of years. The exact positions on the timeline were difficult to ascertain. Not like Macuil had been interested in making a proper calendar.
What remained was a load of open questions. There were possible factors in play that could turn this into another threat he had to track. He estimated that likelihood as low. Too many signs pointed at this being one of the many, many, many threats that had surfaced and been dealt with long before he was alive.
Still, there was a bit of base paranoia he couldn’t shake.
“Being powerful has odd psychological effects,” John said, once they were out of the hidden chamber and back in the jungle.
“What do you mean?” Moira asked.
“Because I am the leader of a world power, my mind goes to trying to solve every problem of the world,” he explained his mental state. “Which in turns makes me start to think whether or not every problem in the world somehow revolves around me. Which… really, nothing that is currently going on in the world does.” John stared blankly into the forest. “Arguably I was the main target of the Lorylim invasion, but we won that. Everything else I am a secondary party to at worst.”
“And still you feel like all of the world’s burdens are yours,” the redhead said, knowingly.
“It’s a little bit different between you and I.” John shook his head, trying to dispel the sorrow creeping into his mind. Just mentioning the Lorylim had drawn his mind back to what he had lost. “You’ve been prepared for the task your entire life. I was a nerd with parents that were a bit too kind for my good.”
A gentle touch on his arm had his eyes snap to Moira. “You are a wise soul, Gamer, never doubt that.” She spoke meticulously, her voice softened from steel to caramel. “Perhaps your parents were not disciplined, but they did imbue you with a kindness that may save the world.”
“…That was beautiful,” Rave commented.
Moira rolled her eyes at the comment and backed away. The touch of her hand on his arm left a warm spot in his awareness.
John was two thoughts removed from pinning her against a tree and claiming her lips. The much weaker one was his crumbling propriety. Losing his parents had been terrible, but she had lost her father, her people, her history and most of her culture all in a day. A culture whose proud past she was now reminded of.
There were no more tears on her face, but she must have been hurting in her own ways. Was it not his duty to give her solace at a time like this?
“He was a protector,” John said. “Your father, I mean.”
“He tried to be,” Nahoa responded in a mumble.
John pulled the white-haired woman into a hug. Her face buried in his naked chest, she remained quiet where she was. No fresh tears wet his skin. Nothing so dramatic was necessary for her to deserve what calm his presence could provide.
Huitzilopochtli, from John’s perspective, was a flawed character, though not in a manner that he could claim was evil. That he had the choice to trade his life to deny Macuil access to his powers meant that there was something he could have done, but would that ever have been the right thing? Had he denied the sacrifice of Atlas and the old pantheon, then he would have perished and Macuil would have been free to terrorize the continent anyhow. Perhaps the best choice really had been to be the puppet on strings. At least that way, he had the influence of dressing up and minimizing the gluttonous god’s cruelties.
John didn’t know if that was the entire truth. It was the most charitable interpretation he had. That made it appropriate for the dead father of a woman he loved.
In due time, Nahoa tilted her head back. She put her chin on his collarbone. Her lips spread into a smile. The structure of her face gave it that alluringly mischievous quality. “Thirty minutes have passed.”
