They were of varying sizes and levels. The larger, the more powerful. Much like with the environment, green was the dominant colour, but blue and red were also present. ‘Guess there’s no reason to change mechanics midway through.’ “Any bets on what the boss of this area is going to be?”
“Response: slime.”
“I reckon an ooze would indeed be most likely to be our adversary.”
“A slime, Master.”
“Do I even need to repeat what everyone else is thinking?” Metra put the finishing line under the cascade of answers.

They did not find out.
The level range of the slimes went from level 300 all the way to 590. In other words, they went from ‘dangerous in large numbers’ all the way to ‘dangerous on their own’. They had three primary abilities, each of which made them difficult to deal with. First was the poison, which built up gradually either due to their attacks or the general state of the environment. Second was that they could meld with rivers or ponds of sludge to camouflage themselves, making each first combat with a new group a gamble on how many they were dealing with. Third was their typical, ooze related capacity to shrug off much of the physical damage.
They adjusted the composition of the party, switching out Metra for Rave, and went for a kiting strategy. As much punishment as the slimes could take, they were slow and the streets long. The group pelted them with ranged attacks from afar and only went in when they had the numbers advantage.
It was a safe and effective strategy, even if Rave’s daredevil nature sometimes changed that fact. It was also slow. The second part of the area was also more difficult to navigate. The blasts had ruined many of the houses and rubble obscured what was supposed to be the main road or whether paths even properly existed. Above the rooftops hung a dense fog of evaporated poison that made travel via rooftops an impossible affair. For game balance reasons, that cloud fog dealt much higher damage than any other types of poison in the Raid so far. A simultaneously creative and forced explanation for restricted movement.
In addition to the slimes, they also had to overcome environmental challenges. Part of the city had collapsed into pits. Runoff piled at the bottom, creating noxious lakes. To cross them, conveniently remaining pillars and other pieces of rubble had to be used to avoid the periodic blasts of noxious fumes or poisonous gunk.
By the end of the five additional hours they put aside for Raiding that day, they had not found the boss. Still, with one down and a level under his belt, John put that day down as a success.
“That’s a quarter of our time here already done,” the Gamer said, adding a fifth line to the chalkboard they had hung up in the living room. It was useful to keep track of the simple things. He stepped away from the board and returned to the couch, where one of the Fae Maids was currently bent over an armrest, wiping away a coffee stain.

It may not be worthwhile to level to beat a challenge that aims to bestow you with levels.”
“True… I guess we’ll have to see how predictable the boss mechanics are… in either case, I believe it’s smartest we first pick off all the non-knight bosses in the districts. They should all be of similar difficulty, so that’ll make for easy pickings and levels. Assuming the next boss in the poison area is an ooze and not the knight, there should be a total of 7 non-knight bosses we can still beat. That might keep us busy until we’re done with this grinding session.”
Only time would tell.
