Although the group largely supplied themselves via the Abyss Auction, there were some days on which they went out to buy things. This was either because there were some things, particularly fresh ingredients, that were difficult to get at an Aclysia-satisfying standard or because they just wanted to take a few hours to hang around in public. John hadn’t been enthusiastic about it that day, having come out of a tedious House of Commons session. Sylph had decided to stay behind with him, the rest of the girls made a day out of it.
Notably, however, two were still missing. “Where did you leave Metra and Beatrice?” he asked. He could have just checked the mental connection, but talking was more interesting.
“Beatrice decided to go to the Fusion Administration and work before returning. Metra said she had a police raid to attend,” Aclysia reported.
“That so?” John wondered and pulled out his phone again. Opening Fusion’s communication app, he checked for recent notifications. The program was in a largely complete state, as far as the surface level was concerned. Graphics were in, text boxes properly aligned and menus intuitive to use. It was in a beta stage where every middle to high ranking official of the Federation had an access code for the program. The code determined what level of access they had while both aura and retina scans confirmed their identity. Scarlett said she was reasonably satisfied with the security precautions, but continued to tinker with things to make them ironclad. They couldn’t afford that system to get invaded.
Much of Fusion’s communication did happen through that app now. Members of parliament received schedules, military information was exchanged and police raids were updated through it. Each of those ran on a different sub system with their separate, different security system. If someone managed to get through Scarlett’s code, they would compromise one section of the program but not all of it.
As leader of Fusion, John had the second highest access rights. For what he looked up now, a lower level would have sufficed. There was a special category of police information that essentially advertised its happening to people of power within Fusion’s military. The police were fundamentally equipped to deal only with every day incidents and the occasional violent criminal. More specialized divisions with more combat-oriented members were trained to deal with raiding criminal hideouts.
While those divisions had the equipment and power to deal with such incidents themselves, it was of obvious benefit if someone of extreme power tagged along. What could be a drawn-out battle between evenly matched forces of crime syndicate against law enforcement could be trivialized by the presence of just one person. When the police thought they needed such reinforcements, they were authorized to simply request it. More often than not, they just informed people that the raid would be happening and if someone mighty wanted to show up, they could just attach themselves to the operation. Metra being who she was, she made a pastime out of attending such things when she feasibly could.
Reading through the mission details, John raised an eyebrow. “Just a few kilometres away from the Hudson Barrier, huh?” he mumbled. “Pretty brazen of people to still put up a new shop in the area… and this is the same organization that was noticed previously but got away?” He looked to Scarlett. “Any reasons to suspect we got a mole inside our ranks?”
“There are more that we do than that we don’t,” Scarlett responded and pulled an expensive looking whiskey bottle out of a paper bag. Walking into the open kitchen, she got herself a glass. Moments later, she sniffed on the amber liquid. “What else is new though? You create an organization of several thousand people and someone will always enrich themselves in some fashion. The time he would have to invest to get powerful equipment out of the Endless Mode was likely better spent running Assaults and getting great amounts of EXP instead. He struggled to have time for that already, so getting something else he could rarely get to sounded stupid.
That left him with Scenario and Adventure. Scenario sounded interesting to start with, but next to Adventure, John just couldn’t help but disregard it. Challenges were cool and all that, but experience and GP weren’t resources he couldn’t come by otherwise. Visiting other worlds, however, was just bursting with possibilities.
That aside, the Adventures could be dropped and picked up at any time. With a promised spread of rewards stemming from Quests and the whole load of different landscapes he was guaranteed to visit, he could think of Adventures somewhat like mini-Raids with more story than combat. That tingled his fancy in so many ways. As much fun as he had with combat, levelling mostly through it was a bit one-note. A good cloak and daggers campaign would be a nice change of pace.
“Ya taking Adventure, right?” Rave asked. He was looking at the window over her shoulder, letting her easily read along.
“No, I am taking Scenario,” he lied and moved his hand towards the middle option at a creeping pace.

“Well, can’t disagree with all these demands,” the Gamer sighed, as if he was doing something against his will, and pressed the button. “We’ll test that out on Wednesday.”
“Why not tomorrow?!” an impatient Rave wanted to know.
“Why not today, if you’re that eager?”
