AFAIK the erase head is usually in the left hole, the record/play head in the middle and the capstan in the right, correct? They are apart round about 4 cm? So the tape slides over the erase head almost a second earlier than over the record head. So you always end up with a silent gap of almost one second? I think that is what you are hearing. The tape deck erased a bit of the start there. I wonder if one of these head flipping Auto-Reverse Tape Decks would limit that, since they got a tiny erase head next to the record head like less than 1 cm apart. New puppet !!!!! Awesome.
