Vintage Hi-Fi: SAE Mark 6
🕑 Added 2016-08-31 22:35:24 +0000 UTC Here's my new video and a brief update.This one has been planned for a while - I wanted to do make it a few weeks ago, but I first had to do the Nixie Clock video to give this one a bit of background and context. Now that I've finally got it finished I think that I should get back to doing a couple of camera reviews as I may have over-done the retro-tech.
Patreon has made these retro-tech videos financially possible, but it seems that they only appeal to a minority of the subscribers because viewing figures for the channel are down. All I can think of is that I haven't been making the kind of videos people expect to see, so its time I get back to doing a few shorter, cheaper simpler videos about things people can actually buy.
If there's something you've spotted on eBay or Amazon that you think people would be interested in seeing in a video I'd love to hear from you.

Absolutely beautiful. I've never been a huge radio fan, but those nixie tubes are to die for.

I have plenty more failed (or unloved) formats to come...but not those two.

I did the K1S...I think I was their first customer...but the others aren't on the plans at the mo. I'm not a fan of Blackvue after testing one a few years ago....very expensive with poor blocky video.

I love the retro tech and failed products episodes. You can see how much effort was put into these products and even though they sometimes were better than the competitor they still failed. What about doing a video about more failed Philips products like Video2000 or CDI-I ?

I think the retro tech stuff is cool. It just probably doesn't appeal to most folks who are looking for reviews of products they would actually buy. Speaking of which, how about reviewing another front/back dual dashcam. I've got plenty of the latter, and have considered making a video about some of the things that didn't work out...but I feel it would be a bit of a downer, too negative.

Hey Mat! Another great video as usual, I really enjoy the retro hi-fi reviews but also enjoy the variety on the channel as well. Have you ever considered doing some retrospective videos? For example, talk about anything you've purchased that went above and beyond expectations? Or, maybe do a compilation video of things you've bought that were the biggest disappointments or just didn't live up to the hype.

I swapped the Pioneer out a while ago for the Cambridge Azur 851A <a href="https://youtu.be/1koy1H9beek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/1koy1H9beek</a> It was in the back of my mind when I did this, that I'd one day be able to get a scope tuner for it...so I'm glad I didn't rush into things and managed to get the SAE I'd always wanted. It will just be another input into the amp...but I want to get a new hifi cabinet first.

Beautiful piece of equipment, I too am a fan of the 70s design ethos. How do you see integrating this with your HIFI? i.e. Are you going to use this an an input to your Pioneer sx-3600 or go with a standalone amp?

Yes, they're more toys than anything else. Kids would love them, but I wouldn't want to watch a film on one.

The cubes were a surprise to me too...but I've never used an oscilloscope so I had a lot of fun running sounds though it. Thats nice to know about the new caps, thanks it looks like there's plenty of life left in it still. I've been trying to source a new scope tube, I know the model number Brimar D7-200GH - I've asked a couple of component suppliers that list it in their catalogue, but so far they've failed to respond. The seller said the scope was a bit dull, and whilst it's not vitally important, it would be nice to get the whole thing up to spec again.

That is a nice piece of kit. The vector forms of some of the test sounds where very ingesting, the isometric cubes especially. On the bottom, it looks like someone has done some repair, there are several modern style electrolytic capacitors. This isn't too surprising, old caps dry out over time and lose capacitance.

So I guess they are not any good :-) 1200x800 projectors seem to cost something like $220-$300

The only problem is that they're usually SD and terrible. The cheap ones will say that they're 1080p, but it just means they'll accept HD their native output resolution is only 480p. I will however look again and see if I can find a HD one that looks good value.

Banggood and other Chinese stores have led projectors for under $100, I wonder if they are any good.

What a nifty receiver. I am always intrigued with Nixie tube and their various uses. It is neat to see another device using nixies in their intended purpose and not necessarily as a clock. The oscilloscope is a very nice touch and the pattern generated were quite intriguing. Sounds nice too ๐. Looking forward to your next intriguing acquisition. Also thank you for the thank you. Your channel is fantastic and is right up my alley.

That's the problem with US radio gear, odd number frequencies.
