BTT - Scale Conditioning Training
🕑 Added 2024-08-13 12:00:03 +0000 UTCThe goal of this training is to condition my sun conures that every time I open their aviary, they are to fly to the scale perch for their weights.
My reasoning for this is that it's a routine every morning to weigh my birds, and to have them fly to the perch instead of me carry them would be a great time saver. Also, it is especially important for these birds in my flock because they are the smallest species I have in my garage among my other birds. This is literally the safest place for them besides on me. I really don't want them landing on the other birds' aviaries and me being scared they might lose a toe or something (because accidents happen quickly!) so this is the most ideal behavior I can train them to do to mitigate that risk.
I'm training it while I can have the garage nice and open so they have more options because in the winter, they will have limited options (including the very close and accessible other cages) so I'm hoping by training it now, they will have it down pretty much perfectly by winter.

My teils are finally figuring out that in order to get their meals I need to get their weights. But they still come to me first then the scale.

I have a little velociraptor in a conure body and I am ever so grateful he's well-trained for hands off. Each morning he is trained to station to his scale like these girls so I can safely clean his cage and change his bowls. This also allows me to judge his body posture and attitude for the day before he's potentially on my shoulder wanting to bite an ear. It also keeps him off my macaw's aviary for safety. Such an important skill for them to have! <3
