Both of my conures hold their poop overnight and have a huge one in the morning when they are let out of their cage. I also thought this was normal. I’ve seen a lot of people ask in the Facebook bird groups and it seems to be a common occurrence.

Our CAG holds his poop all/most of the night. Our female B/G Macaw will holds her poop off in holding her. She's held it for over an hour while traveling until we stopped & I put her on something.

I thought gigantic "morning poops" that were held all night were totally normal. Both my Cape and my conure never poop in their sleep cages, so that's 12-13 hours every night. Their morning poops are colossal.

My B&G holds his poops all night and they smell terrible in the morning. My vet said not to worry about it and that the smell is from it fermenting in his crop.

My caique never poops at night too, first thing in the morning when he wakes up he will always do a giant poop we warn people not to get him out the cage until he's done it!

My conure would never poop in his cage when I first brought him home. In away it was nice but then if I couldn't be home to get him out I would worry but eventually he started to go more in his cage. It may be the small space of the sleep cage he doesn't want to poop in.

My Hahn's holds his poop at night and sometimes when he is alone. My cockatiel did the same thing. I always assumed it was to stay hidden from predators. The poop gives away roosting location. I'm curious if this is more of an only bird quirk. Birds may feel safer in numbers. Even though they might be different species and not get along, there is still a flock dynamic in multiple bird households. I'd be interested in hearing what others have experienced. BTW, my Hahn's flock call is PEEKABOO. Peekaboo is quite adorable the first hundred times you hear it in a single day. 🤣
