We have some heartbreaking news... 💔

I really wish I had it in me to record a video explaining everything to you, but I just don't and I apologize for that... so it'll be quite a bit of text coming your way...
Our beloved project bird Bluee the parrotlet, has passed away. Luckily, I was the one to find him before Capri came home that day. I actually went in to love on him for a little bit before she got home because we all know how she hogged him... and he was lying on the bottom of the cage near his food dishes.
I immediately prepared him and sent him off to WSU for a necropsy as there were no obvious signs of cause of death. We knew when adopting him that he wouldn't have a long life, and even at his checkup they reminded us of this fact but I don't think we predicted how short his time was with us either. To put a timestamp on his time with us, we picked him up in July of 2022.
Many of the videos you are all enjoying of him on a weekly basis over on BirdTricks Kids were recorded during the summer and fall of having him with us. He had so many adventures with us immediately that we didn't want to miss a moment.
And he was such a good traveler!
So a note to that, those videos will still be coming out every Saturday on the BirdTricks Kids channel, and please don't stop watching them and sharing them. Hopefully you can still watch them with a smile and know that you are supporting Capri's channel. We will eventually let people know on that channel and more publicly at some point, but for now having those videos scheduled is a blessing because there is no rush...
I'm sure you all can assume how utterly devastated, heart broken, sad, shocked... just riddled with sadness Capri is. This was the exact reason she adopted him, was because she knew he didn't have long to live and she wanted his last months (what we thought would be years) of life to be the very best they could be.
We used to joke that Bluee just wanted Capri to be sick all the time because on sick days she would stay home and cuddle with him allllll day and if she simply left the room to get a snack he would be calling after her. We would all give him words and yell at her like, "hey, get back here and cuddle me! you can't leave me for this many seconds at a time after that much love! get in here!!" We loved how much he loved being and feeling loved. Every morning she would spend over an hour just cuddling him in her bed. He was so content just with her.
As some of you know, we opened up our first 501(c)3 non-profit called Project Parrots. We are in the very early stages (only got a bank account for it a few days ago) but it finally had its first expenses and that was paying for Bluee's necropsy and cremation. If you want to cover just part of it, here is the breakdown of his necropsy and cremation expenses (we did have him cremated so that Capri can spread his ashes when she's ready, and we also requested his leg band be sent to us so if you guys have any ideas for how to best use it, I'm all ears.)

His cause of death came back as he was predisposed to a disease called necrotic enteritis which is when the intestines are inflamed and start to die. In cases of stress or damage, this disease comes out of nowhere and not a lot about it is understood. Secondary, he had signs of atherosclerosis from a high fat diet in the past. So basically, his life in that hoarding situation for so long just set him up for all of this. Although we knew we couldn't reverse everything with changing his diet and environment, we are really glad we were able to make a difference in how he felt about people (at least one human).
I know Capri will keep her heart open to another project bird in the future but right now we are just wanting her to know it's safe and appropriate to mourn and miss him.

I wanted you all to know first. And just know it will likely take us a while to go public with this information. It's just a lot of sadness right now and when Capri is distracted she's great but when she remembers, she's not. We are all not... especially Blueberry who has been probably the most affected which also came as a complete surprise to us.
Thanks for listening, and thank you to any of you who choose to help us in these expenses. I've always just had my business cover project bird expenses unless someone has pushed me more adamantly to cover something (like last year with Sunny's vet bill being completely sponsored by a single patron - WOW!) and now I'm choosing to be more transparent about the expenses we normally endure and be okay asking for help.
Project Parrots and this link is a registered non-profit so your donations are tax deductible. I'm still working on a website and logo for it and we have applied to be a verified charity with PayPal but that will take at least 3 days for our approval process because again, so new.

Hi Jamie, sorry to hear the sad news. It's great you've set up your non profit to help more project birds, but if Bluee was adopted as a personal pet (paperwork processed) I don't think the funds can be used for Bluee's necropsy and cremation. Please be careful so you don't get in trouble with any audits.

Im really sorry for your loss and I think did you did exceptionally well at giving Bluee the best possible end of life experience. I lost one of my two budgies Sunshine a year ago after she dislocated her wing and the vet put her in a sling. After 6 weeks of being stressed out in a wing sling, I believe her immune system was compromised and she got sick and passed away. The other budgie Sunny is still doing amazing and living her best life with my other parrrot Zeno.

I’m so incredibly sorry to hear this! 😭 As the owner of a blue parrotlet I was SO excited to watch your family with Bluee and see how you handled issues related to him/his care. I hope Capri knows she did exactly what she set out to—she gave him the best life he could’ve had and the love he deserved until his last day. I am so sad for all of you. It’s so hard to see our children learn how to deal with death of something they love so much. You offered Bluee extra months that I am sure she would never have had. So many hugs coming to you all. I lost my English Parakeet very suddenly and I was devastated and now I am dealing with my Boston Terrier having brain tumor. If you and Capri likes it, you could buy crystal beads to add some symbolism of healing energy to it.

You can color his leg band with sparkly clear/non-opaque gel nail polish and make a pendent out of it, you could either use it for a necklace (which sounds too odd to me because Capri is young and it doesn’t make sense to me as an age appropriate thing) but you could use a beautiful string add spacial beads to represent things that symbolizes him and hang it somewhere that he enjoyed spending time in (maybe in your balcony).

I am so sorry, so so so sorry. Sending hugs and healing blessings towards you all but especially for Capri. Sweet girl that is a big loss she was so unconditionally loving with him and it is so hard to loose a loved friend. I wish I was close enough to bake her comforting cookies and give her a little hug. Bluee was such a special sweet bird, truly one of the kind! You shared SO MICH GOODNESS in the period of time, Capri and Bluee formed such a true friendship together, what a safe heaven you gave him - he got to heal before passing, he got to end his journey surrounded with love happiness and proper wellbeing. Capri, just know that we all are supporting you and mourn with your family's loss of sweet, little Bluee. My heart aches for you as I personally have experienced the sudden loss of one of my babies that I actually named after you♥️! I just loved your name and your cute little spirit when you were you were younger (and now, of course). Soil found it perfect for my little rescue Caique. Please take the time to feel your sadness and know the void he left in your heart will always be there for him but most importantly remember that both you and your parents gave him a wonderful home and so so so much love! I'm so so sorry! We all know how painful this is and seeing our kids hurt has to be twice as painful!! Have you seen those small containers that they put sand or glitter or sparkles in then wear them as a necklace. You can buy a really cheap one at a dollar store. You could put a small amount of his ashes in one and put his ring on it as a necklace to hang in her room. Maybe a little love bird would be a fun bird to work with. I know you usually try to help out Ronie's but I have a friend who has another small rescue here in Utah and she took in a large amount of small birds from a hoarding situation and might have plenty she could choose from. Even another budgie might be a great learning experience for a lot of people. I know she will be great with whatever she chooses. xoxo

I am so sad to hear this! My daughter is now 18, but when she was about Capri’s age, she lost “her” first pet as well (a Guinea pig, in her case). It was very hard. She wondered aloud if she had played with him enough, fed him the right food, loved him enough — and worried that she hadn’t been the best friend to him. She was enough. She was the best, the exact right owner for him. If Capri is feeling this, please tell her that she was the best owner Bluee could have asked for. Know that as parents our role supporting our children in caring for animals is crucial — Bluee had the best of all worlds in a kid who was devoted to him and adults who guided her. His little life had purpose, he was important, and he finally knew the love he was destined for all along. Sadness is completely natural, and it is completely difficult. Thank you all for continuing to share your journey with him, with us.

So sorry for your loss. I've never lost a bird, but there have been many cats and dogs over the years (and snakes and skunks and rats and hermit crabs and a rabbit and a few tarantulas) It's never easy, and specially not if you're young. I'm sorry for Capri and Blueberry as well.

So sorry to hear this guys 💔. My first pet loss as a child was a green Pacific Parrotlet named Jasper. I was 12 at the time and a mess. Though impossible to understand in the moment, my heart had room for many more future feathered friends in need but I’m always thankful for the things Jasper taught me.
