Today I had an “expert” on budgies tell me that we should not feed pellets but only fresh chop and seeds and they should have access to seed 24/7. It made me so sad

I have a follow-up question on this topic! Does it still hold that sprouted seeds, legumes, and grains are healthier than unsprouted? (e.g. beans, oat groats, millet) Thanks!! 🌱

Thanks for the info!! I plan to get him in to our new certified avian vet as soon as possible, so I will ask about milk thistle! I’m glad it has worked for Bondi!! That gives me hope for my Merlin. 🦜❤️

Depending on his labs, you may consider milk thistle as a lifetime supplement. We have Bondi on it for life since messing up her diet originally and it has helped a ton. But I would only use it based on a vet recommendation so they can give you proper dosage (otherwise you can over do it and make the bird's digestive area and bowels uncomfortable).

OMG about the 90% pellets!! Before we got an avian certified vet in our area, I had to deal with the ”best of the worst” options for a vet who is not certified for birds but sells himself on “being a member of the AAV”. I digress, but this vet told me that my Amazon should be on 90% pellets and 10% fruit! Not even veggies, but fruit! I’m eternally grateful I found BirdTricks and have my boy eating the fresh food seasonal diet and your pellets!!! I’m hoping that over time his liver numbers will go down some, so he can live into his 60s and beyond! Thanks for all you do to educate us bird lovers!! ❤️

I asked Patty and here’s her reply: Yeah there’s tons of sodium added to canned beans and rinsing them only removes about 30% of it. There are no salt added brands which can be used, though. However, they won’t hold up to the freezing process and will usually turn to mush once thawed. If she wants to use no salt added canned beans they would have to be added to the meal on a daily basis.

Soaking nuts is a huge VEGAN thing... for the reason Patty said but also because it can make them easier to work with when creating recipes ;)

My bird soaks everything that isn't nailed down but never nuts. Those don't last long enough to get soaked. Love Patty❣️❣️ Awesome TT episode!

Loved the blooper reel at the beginning. I recently heard of it in a 2 year old Mikey and Mia video with a guest who did it. The samples she brought where very heavy on nuts so that might be why or maybe it's just a European thing. Either way, I had the same reaction as Patty. I'm pretty sure it was before your consult / collab with them so hopefully you set them straight. :)
