I do this through the cage bars too. It really helped my birds get more used to their toes/feet being handled, and to have their nails trimmed.

May be that your relationship isn’t ready for what kind of trust/discomfort this entails and you should work towards it with some other forms of training first.

my african grey doesn’t have the best balance so holding the feetsies really helped him learning to calm down perching on the hand, because he was very fearful of falling off or feeling off balance. this is very helpful!

Great advice! I’ve definitely seen the advice of leaving the new bird for a week before touching it. I love how you address that the mindset of fear has the opportunity to set in when this occurs. ❤️

I really hope you don't mind my input here, all my birds are rescues or removed so training to get them comfortable with me touching there feet took some time. So how I achieved this was iwould randomly touch their feet and reward for allowing it even though they were very uncomfortable with it. So for example, when they would hang out with me I would just touch or stroke there feet then reward them for allowing it. This helped so much with getting them used to me touching and then holding there feet.

I was so happy to have your 'Day 1' advise with the Caique I took in!!! He took to chop right off and I started holding his feet and he is totally fine with it! My others that I have had since babies it was just what I did when they stepped up and I guess I have been lucky that they accepted it. Such great advise and I also cringe whenever I hear that someone left their new bird in a cage for a week to adjust.😁
