The realization was as humbling as it was unsettling. They had reached nowhere in the grand scheme of things, and considering how they had now attracted the attention of extraterrestrial forces, it made development the highest priority.
The images cycled—Chitauri soldiers falling, civilians fleeing, Iron Man soaring through the air, and the portal closing as a nuclear warhead disappeared into the void. Fury’s gaze lingered on the last image, his lips pressed into a tight line.
The battle was a success on paper, but he saw too many cracks. Cracks that couldn’t be ignored.
The screen shifted again, this time showing Natasha Romanoff, Maria Hill, and Felicia Hardy working with precise coordination inside Hydra’s fortress. It was not noticeable directly, but SHIELD had technology powerful enough to decipher camouflage, no matter how advanced it looked.

Yet his focus was not on their prowess. It was on their loyalty—something he no longer trusted to lie solely with SHIELD It would be apt to say that he had been feeling this way for a while now.

Fury respected Potter’s power and instincts, even though he was not entirely comfortable with the man’s demeanor, and their ideologies also clashed too often for comfort.

It was apparent to anyone who looked closer, and even though they maintained impeccable professionalism, Fury knew who they were truly loyal to.
Sighing, he rubbed his temple. He had prolonged this matter enough. It was time he addressed it.
He waved the holograph aside, pulling up the live camera feed from various locations on the Helicarrier, his eye darting around to catch a glimpse of the people he had asked to arrive for a meeting. Roughly five minutes later, he saw them appear out of thin air, and he could not suppress the sigh that escaped him. Even after so many months, he still could not get his head around Harry Potter’s powers.
He tracked their movement through the Helicarrier as they passed by various SHIELD agents and employees. Most were either cursory glances or courteous greetings, with both parties taking their leave within seconds, but there was one person who lingered longer than he believed was necessary.
Fury watched with a small frown as all five stopped to converse with Agent Carter right outside her office. His sharp eye surveyed the scene, particularly the look on Agent Carter and Agent Hardy’s faces. He knew they shared a past—Agent Hardy had been the one to save Agent Carter, while Harry Potter had healed her so quickly, and his lips set in a thin line as he watched them converse. He hoped he would not need to add another name to the list, but he had to be prepared for the eventuality nonetheless.
They parted ways a few more minutes later, all smiles, and Fury schooled his features when he saw them approach his office. He turned his back on the door, gazing outside the massive window that gave him a view of the flight deck on the outside as he awaited them.
A sharp knock came at the door before it slid open automatically, but Fury kept his eye firmly ahead. He heard them shuffle behind him, Harry Potter undoubtedly having entered first.
“Playing the mysterious character today?”
Fury breathed out slowly as he turned around, taking in the same damned smirk on the wizard’s face as he stood at the center, with two women flanking him on either side—Maria Hill and Helen Cho on his left, Natasha Romanoff and Felicia Hardy on his right. Two brunettes, two blondes—it was quite a collection he had gathered in such a short span.
“I see some changes, Agent Romanoff,” Fury commented, gesturing toward her hair which was both longer and blonde in color.
“You eyeing my girl, Nick? I thought you were… well, I don’t really know your preferences, really,” Harry remarked. “Still, eye off, old man.”
Fury’s brow twitched, but he kept his composure. “Sit down, Potter. And you four as well.”
Harry smirked, knowing he had rattled the man, once again, but he said nothing as they all settled in. He caught Maria’s exasperated glance as they took their seats and merely winked at her. The brunette could only sigh in resignation. It was high time she got used to this really.
“Quite the show in Sokovia,” Fury started, his voice smooth. However, he ensured his authority was reflected in both his voice and his demeanor. Resolving to get to the crux of the matter as soon as possible, he continued, “Nuclear warhead through a portal? Bold move.”
Harry leaned casually in his chair, his arms crossed behind his head as he made himself comfortable. “Had to make a call. HYDRA was crumbling, and the Chitauri couldn’t be allowed to dig in. Worked out, didn’t it?”
“Worked out,” Fury echoed, his gaze and tone both flat. “But it could’ve gone sideways fast. A nuke detonating in the wrong place would’ve turned Sokovia into fallout central. You gamble big, Potter. Not everyone can afford your stakes.”
“I don’t gamble without knowing the odds,” Harry shot back. “I had Stark calculate the trajectory, and we were ready to close the portal if things went south. Risk? Sure. Recklessness? Never.”
Fury leaned forward, planting his hands on the table. “Risk has a way of getting out of hand. You might want to remember that next time you take it upon yourself to call in Armageddon.”
Harry’s smirk faded slightly, but he held his ground. “And you might want to remember that if we hadn’t taken that risk, we’d still be cleaning up HYDRA’s mess. I deal with problems before they get worse. It’s not pretty, but it works.”
The room hung heavy with tension as their words lingered. Natasha shifted slightly, her sharp eyes moving between the two men. Maria sat like a statue, arms settled by her sides, while Felicia watched with an amused glint in her eyes. Helen remained quiet but alert, a subtle frown on her lips.
Fury leaned back slightly, his eye surveying the entire group as a whole. “Alright. Let’s talk about what went down inside the HYDRA fortress.” His trained eye studied the subtle shift in their demeanor, and his jaw tightened. “The Tesseract. Did you recover it?”
“We neutralized Hydra’s operations in the fortress. Their experiments were destroyed, and the civilians they were holding were freed.”
“That was not my question, Agent Romanoff,” Fury shot back, his gaze narrowing. “The Tesseract. Where is it?”
“The situation was chaotic, Director,” Maria took up the mantle as she responded calmly. “Our priority was to ensure the safety of the civilians trapped inside the fortress, coordinate rescue operations, and eliminate any HYDRA assets we encountered.”
“You’re dodging the question as well, Hill,” Fury said, his voice low. “The Tesseract was the cornerstone of their experiments, and you’re telling me you couldn’t prioritize it enough? That you left it behind?”
“We did what we were sent to do—shut HYDRA down and save lives. Mission accomplished,” Felicia replied with a careless shrug.
“You were sent there to recover the Tesseract as well, Agent Hardy.”
“No, that’s what Harry decided when we figured out where the Tesseract was,” Felicia replied.
Fury took a deep breath as he turned to Harry who was staring back with an amused curl of his lips that infuriated him to no end. “And you? No clever quips? No bold declarations about what you ‘handled’?”
Harry’s eyes glinted as he leaned back in his chair and regarded the man sitting in front of him. “You mean, aside from fighting off a Chitauri invasion with a group of talented fighters while your agents did their part? I think I’ve said enough.”
Fury’s expression tightened. “Don’t play coy with me, Potter. You know exactly what the Tesseract is capable of. SHIELD can’t afford to leave it out there, out of its jurisdiction.”
Harry straightened, leaning closer, his elbows on the table and his tone sharper now. “And what would SHIELD do with it, Fury? Stick it in a lab and poke at it again? Haven’t we seen that movie before? Or do I need to remind you how your little science project worked out last time?”
Fury’s eye narrowed. “You’re saying we’re not equipped to handle it. Fine. Let’s talk about you. What makes you think you are? Justified or not, you called for a nuke on Sokovia—let’s not act like you’re above making reckless decisions.”
Harry held Fury’s gaze, his voice unwavering. “Because I don’t treat power like a toy. I’ve seen what it can do, and I know how to keep it from being misused. Can you say the same? Last time SHIELD got its hands on the Tesseract, Syl—Loki waltzed in, took off with it, and Sokovia turned into a battleground for the Chitauri while HYDRA began to conduct human experiments.”
“A lot has happened so far, Potter, and we all learn from the past.”
“Have you, though?” Harry’s voice was cold now, cutting through the tension like a blade. “Because from where I sit, you’re still chasing things you can’t control, hoping for a different outcome. The Tesseract is secure, and that’s all you need to know.”
Fury’s jaw tightened. “You’re not giving me much to work with here, Potter. I don’t take kindly to being kept in the dark.”
“Maybe that’s because you’re not the one who has to hold that kind of power in your hands,” Harry replied evenly. “Trust me when I say you don’t want to be.”
Fury gazed evenly at Harry who was staring back meaningfully at him. He released a deep breath and closed his eye, leaning back. “And what about Loki and that scepter? Are they conveniently ‘secure’ as well?”
Harry’s expression hardened. “Loki and her scepter are where they need to be—out of the wrong hands. That includes, HYDRA. And SHIELD… And Asgard.”
“You are playing a dangerous game, Potter. You know what courting war with Asgard could mean for us,” Fury grunted.
“And yet you’ve not done anything to reverse the situation,” Harry retorted calmly. “Which tells me you recognize this for what it is. An opportunity. I know how your mind works by now, Nick. You cannot fool me. You know keeping Loki here means there would be no attack from Asgard, no matter how much Thor shouts about war and retribution.”
Fury’s lip twitched, the smallest flicker of frustration breaking through. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of confidence for someone who likes to keep secrets.”
“It’s not confidence,” Harry said, his tone steady. “It’s necessity. You may not like how I operate, Fury, but I get results. The Tesseract, Loki, and the scepter—they are safe because I’m not letting anyone—Hydra, SHIELD, or Thor—use them to play god.”
“Technically, Thor is a god,” Felicia quipped.
“He can think he is one,” Harry replied calmly. “But he is not getting anywhere close to her.”
Fury studied Harry for a long moment, his gaze unreadable. There was something else that was motivating him, but he did not know what it could be. His eyes drifted to the four women sitting with Potter, and try as he might, he could not stop his thoughts from going astray. His eye flashed momentarily, and he let out a resigned sigh.
“Do not tell me you are letting your libido cloud your judgment, Potter,” Fury muttered.
Despite the tension that was palpable around them, both Felicia and Helen snorted, and that was all the answer Fury needed.
“Seriously, Potter? Is a little bit of seriousness too much of an ask?”
“You do not need to worry about Asgard or Loki, Nick. Trust me on that.”
“Convenient that I have to take your word for it.”
“It is,” Harry said simply, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “But that’s how it has to be. Trust isn’t a luxury in our line of work, but sometimes you don’t get a choice.”
Fury exhaled and straightened, getting out of the chair. He walked over to the front, gazing out of the window. “That brings us to another reason why you’re all here. I’ve been doing some thinking—about the future of SHIELD, and about yours.”
He turned to the four women, his gaze steady but unreadable. “Romanoff, Hill, Hardy, Cho—you’ve served SHIELD with distinction. No one can question your dedication or your results. But recent events, including this conversation, have proved something I can’t ignore. Your loyalties… they have shifted.”
Their eyes narrowed slightly as they gazed back at him.
“Shifted?” Natasha asked. “We’ve followed every order, every mission at the risk of our lives.”
“And flawlessly, I am not denying that,” Fury acknowledged. “But I’ve been in this game too long to miss the signs. Your allegiance isn’t to SHIELD anymore—it’s to the man sitting with you. Whether that’s because of personal ties or shared ideals, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you can’t serve two masters, no matter how well you think you can.”
“Are you saying we haven’t been loyal? Because I think our track record speaks for itself,” Maria intoned with a frown.
“There’s no room for divided loyalties in an organization like this—not when we’re dealing with threats at this scale. And let’s not pretend you don’t see it, too. You trust him more than you trust me,” Fury replied calmly.
Maria’s lips pressed into a thin line but she did not immediately deny it.
“You think we can’t balance both? That we can’t be with Harry and still do our jobs as efficiently as we have been doing?” Helen asked, her voice quieter but no less firm.
“It’s not about balance. It’s about the future. About knowing who’s calling the shots when everything goes to hell. You’re loyal to him—not to SHIELD And that’s fine. But it means we need to redefine what your place is going to be in the future.”
Felicia tilted her head, a smirk playing on her lips as she realized where Fury was going with this. It was classic.
“You’re cutting us loose, then?” She asked.
Fury met her gaze evenly, feeling the eyes of the other four on him. “Not cutting you loose. Reassigning you. Effective immediately, you’re no longer agents of SHIELD. You’re being given the freelance status. Consultants, like Potter here. Free to operate on your own terms, without SHIELD’s leash. If you choose to help us in the future, great. If not, that’s your call.”
Helen’s lips parted slightly in surprise. “Just like that? After everything we’ve done?”
“Exactly because of everything you’ve done,” Fury replied. “You’ve earned the right to choose your own path. We all know this is where things were heading. This way, there’s no conflict of interest.”
Felicia raised an eyebrow, her tone light but pointed. “And what if we don’t want to ‘consult’ at all? What if we walk out that door and never look back?”
“As I said, that’s up to you,” Fury said. “But I wouldn’t be making this offer if I didn’t think you’d take it. The world’s too dangerous to sit on the sidelines, and I know you’re not the kind to sit still. But SHIELD isn’t the place for you anymore. Not as agents.”
“So you’re cutting ties,” Helen stated quietly.
“It’s not about cutting ties,” Fury said. “It’s about doing what’s right for all of us. For you, for SHIELD, and for the missions ahead. You’ve become something different—something more. I respect that. But this organization needs people who are all in, and that’s not where you are anymore.”
Maria regarded her former close confidant. She knew Fury, and she had a feeling that something like this was coming their way soon. On the one hand, this felt rather sudden, but when she truly thought about everything Fury had said to her about Harry’s involvement with them, she realized it was high time Fury pulled the plug.
“This isn’t a punishment,” she finally spoke, her tone measured.
“No, it isn’t,” Fury confirmed. “It’s me keeping things clean. SHIELD needs clarity, and you four need freedom. Call it a mutual favor. If you want to work with us again, on your terms, the door’s open. As consultants. That’s how Stark operates. That’s how Rogers operates. And now, that’s how you’ll operate.”
“This is your final decision?” Maria asked pointedly.
Fury turned his gaze to Harry, his expression unreadable. “Potter’s a wildcard. Always has been. But you’ve tied yourselves to him, whether you admit it or not. That doesn’t work for SHIELD. But it might work for the world.”
Harry straightened slightly, leaning back in his chair. “You don’t need to make this about me, Nick. They’re capable of making their own decisions.”
Fury’s gaze didn’t waver. “I know that. But you’re the reason I’m making this call now, instead of later. Like it or not, Potter, you’re their center of gravity. And that means they’re not mine to command anymore.”
The room was silent for a moment, all contemplating Fury’s announcement.
Natasha nodded first, her expression firm but understanding. “You’re doing what you think is best. I can respect that.”
Felicia chuckled softly, crossing her arms. “Guess I was meant to work for you for only a few months. At least this means no more paperwork. Thanks for that.”
Helen hesitated, her voice quieter. “I didn’t think it’d be like this, but... I get it.”
Maria took the longest, her gaze steady as she regarded Fury who gazed back at her with his usual calm expression. She released a soft breath and a small smile curved her lips. “We’ll stay in touch. You know where and how to find us.”
Fury nodded, his expression softening slightly. “You’re some of the best I’ve ever worked with. Don’t think for a second I don’t appreciate what you’ve done.”
Apart from Felicia, all three women straightened slightly at that, their expressions shifting subtly. This was as much emotion as one could expect the man to show, and he was being truly sincere right now. All they could do was nod politely. They might have had differences in opinions, but they respected the man immensely for what he had done and how he conducted himself as the Director of SHIELD.
Harry finally spoke, trying to elevate the mood. “Well, that settles it then. You’re officially with me now, girls. No more reporting unnecessarily or being answerable to big old pirate over here.”
“Do not push the boundaries, Potter,” Fury replied calmly. “And do not think for a second that you are not answerable for your actions. Especially you, after pushing the boundaries so much.”
“You seem to hold issues with me, Nick,” Harry remarked with a raised eyebrow.
“You gathered as much just now?” Fury raised an eyebrow. “Doctor Banner is under your supervision, and so are two powerful artifacts that could essentially obliterate the world. The less I say about Thor’s sister, the better it would be. So yes, Potter. I do have issues with you. And I would like you to resolve them as soon as you can.”
“Err… hold up. I think we’re about to have an unwelcome guest,” Harry intoned with a hand raised up. Right on cue, thunder rumbled overhead and a massive bolt of lightning streaked across the clouded sky. Fury let out a resigned sigh as the Helicarrier rattled in the air for a moment before it quickly righted itself.
Their newest guest announced himself in no time and Fury opened the door, allowing him entry.
“You are earlier than expected.”
Thor did not acknowledge Fury, for his eyes were fixated on Harry who sat calmly, gazing back at the Asgardian.
“Still pissed, are you? I fixed your hammer, didn’t I?”
“I am here for my sister,” Thor grunted.
“Man, your instrument’s stuck on one note. Give it a rest, will ya?”
Thor’s grip tightened on his hammer, and Harry did not miss the motion. His gaze traveled upward to Thor’s face and he knew whatever little camaraderie they had shared on the battlefield was already a thing of the past. Slowly, he got to his feet and stretched lightly.
“Alright, big guy. Let’s take this outside, shall we? I don’t think this little ship would survive what we’ll be throwing at it.”
“Oh, enough already!”
Maria Hill shot to her feet and placed an exasperated hand on Harry’s chest, pushing him back lightly.
“One little talk. That’s all you two need, and this can be resolved. Is that too much to ask for?” She asked, gazing pointedly at her boyfriend who stared back with pursed lips.
“Maybe tell that to the loose transistor over there? I’m not the one trying to pick a fight here.”
“You surely aren’t helping matters any,” Maria retorted as she pushed him back in his chair. Sighing, Harry allowed her and watched her turn to Thor with the same glare. “And you. If you care even a little bit about your sister, then you’ll sit and listen, or you can fuck off right where you came from.”
“Ooh. Language, missy,” Felicia added snidely, smirking. Maria ignored her, glaring at Thor. The God of Thunder stared at her for a long moment and he failed to make her budge. His eyes shifted over to Harry who gave him a wink, enraging him further. However, the thought of his sister made him relent, and he lowered himself into a chair that Fury quietly slid forward. His hammer resting on the table to his right, he took a deep breath and gazed straight at the wall in the middle.
“Well then, let’s get this out of the way, shall we?” Fury remarked pointedly. “If you’d enlighten us as to what is going on with Doctor Banner and Loki now?”
Maria gazed pointedly at Harry who let out a resigned sigh and started to explain. He told them about Stuttgart, the battle afterward, the capture of Sylvia, and the aftermath in his apartment. Thor’s eyes widened as he listened, his disbelief growing by the second. His hands were balled in fists as he realized what had truly happened to his sister, his rage palpable.
Meanwhile, Fury’s analytical mind was hard at work as he considered everything that was revealed, especially after Helen took over the explanations. Although a part of him was relieved that Doctor Banner had woken up and a breakthrough was possible, he could not help but be skeptical of this plan that was being proposed by the woman.
Helen explained everything to Fury, and once she was done, the Director of SHIELD turned to stare at a dumbfounded Thor who could do nothing but stare back in silence.
Unbeknownst to everyone else, there was only one thought racing through the God of Thunder’s mind—just how badly had he, his family, and the rest of Asgard failed his sister?

I forgot if mentioned this for the last chapter where Harry and Thor fought, but I always believed that their battle was the result of retarded machismo on both sides. I gave Thor a bit of leeway for his genuine concern about his sister, but Harry had no excuse. He had all the relevant information and could've made a magical vow that Sylvia was safe, no skin on him.
