A Cosmic Rendition: Chapter 5
🕑 Added 2023-02-20 17:30:01 +0000 UTCThe soft sound of a door sliding open travelled around the basement of Tony Stark’s Malibu mansion. The man in question didn’t bother looking up, so engrossed was he in his tinkering with the latest model of his suit.
“Alright JARVIS, run the simulation once again,” Stark prompted as he adjusted the thruster and took a step back.
“Initiating launch protocol. Simulation commencing in 3… 2… 1…”
Tony ducked under the shrapnel that was flung right towards his head, looking with wide eyes as it embedded itself in the metallic wall behind him. The trusted red and gold model resembling a leg cracked in the middle and exploded. A robot arm quickly sprayed the thick white compressed gas all over the simulation area. Tony coughed.
“My God, you okay!?” A breathless female voice to his left prompted the genius billionaire to look over, and he smirked.
“As fit as ever,” Tony replied promptly as his assistant stared at him with wide eyes.
“I’m honestly getting sick of all these experiments of yours. One day something’s going to go wrong, I can tell you that,” she replied with a frown.
“Well, then I look forward to you telling me ‘I told you so’,” Tony replied, unbothered as he grabbed the glass she was carrying and took a big gulp.
Handing the glass back to her, he asked, “Something’s the matter?”
Pepper Potts sighed. There was no use in talking sense into this man, particularly when he got into one of those inventive moods of his.
Instead of verbally answering, she held out a small envelope. Tony took it and tore it open, scoffing at the invitation.
“Another pretentious gala. No need to RSVP. They’ll know I’m not coming anyway.”
Pepper frowned.
“This is the fourth one you’ve declined to even respond to. After shutting down the weapons division all those years ago, you’ve been taking decisions I can’t make sense of. Please reconsider,” she sighed. Tony shrugged.
“I can’t bother to tolerate their pretentiousness, to be perfectly honest with you. What’s going to happen anyway? People sucking up for a while, youngsters trying to take a selfie or an autograph, the whole shabang. I’d rather not bother with it, Miss Potts.”
Pepper sighed again, “Guess I’ll have to do it once again then.”
“Hmm? Do what?”
“Well, who do you think has been going to those galas in your stead?”
Tony sighed, “Miss Potts, you really need to stop with this. I’ve told you to ignore these invitations.”
“Well, it’s my job to look after this company, and it means doing what you consider worthless even when it might be an opportunity or is important. How do you think we managed to get those AI tenders last month?”
Tony smirked, “I knew I could trust you with running this company. What a CEO you are. Still, my point remains. I can’t allow you to go alone if you’ve decided anyway.”
Pepper inwardly smirked.
“You need to leave by 7 PM.”
Tony nodded, already turning around to tinker with the suspended screen. Pepper shook her head and turned to leave.
“Wear that red one I bought you on your birthday. I’ll meet you outside at 7 sharp.”
Pepper didn’t pause in her stride as she walked out of the glass door with her face set in a small smile.

A large jet tore through the skyscape over the North Atlantic Ocean, leaving nothing but a sonic boom in its wake. The destination was already in sight on the radar.
“Well, we’re due to arrive in five minutes tops,” Natasha remarked as she took a seat on the chair close beside her two lovers, chuckling when Phil averted his eyes.
“You don’t need to look so uncomfortable, Agent Coulson,” she commented with a smirk.
“Old habits die hard, Agent Romanoff. I’m sure you understand. I’ve worked with your parents for years now.”
Natasha sighed. Her parents were truly quite the exhibitionists. Everyone in SHIELD had heard them in action at least once. Even she had commented how they should be more mindful, but although they did it behind closed doors, you couldn’t block the sound every time.
Perhaps that was the reason why both she and Yelena didn’t turn out to be such prudes.
Bruce smirked to the side as his hand absently stroked Selina’s bare waist, “I’m sure you’ve had some action yourself in all your years of service, Agent Coulson.”
Coulson chuckled, “The past is in the past, Mr Wayne. I am happily a one-woman man now.”
“Good for you,” Bruce replied with a chuckle as he wrapped another arm around Nat’s bare waist. Both women were wearing tight black pants that curved around their legs and asses and short tops coming down to their midriff, exposing their stomachs. A black jacket completed the attire. Bruce had taken one look at them and found himself without any complaints.
Coulson saw him and shook his head. Beyond his Batman persona, Phil found Mr Wayne a very outgoing individual. Although slightly conceited, something that reminded him of another billionaire superhero, Mr Wayne seemed perfectly at ease, particularly around his two women. Coulson still had a hard time wrapping his mind around the fact that this man right here had managed to land the notorious Black Widow. Everyone in SHIELD knew how tough the woman was, and he couldn’t help but commend the man for that achievement.
The jet slowly descended, and they watched out the window. Floating above the ocean was the hellicarrier where they were supposed to meet.
“Well, we’re here,” Nat commented as she got up once the jet landed. The door at the back opened, and they saw several agents standing on either side.
“This is where we part ways,” Coulson commented as he shook hands with Bruce and Selina before exchanging nods with Natasha and Fury and walking away. They watched two more agents join him as Bruce looked around.
“A special welcome for me? I’m flattered,” he commented with a smirk. Nat scoffed and shook her head. Nick Fury, the Director of ARGUS who had remained silent throughout the journey led the way. The agents bowed respectfully in front of him.
With their hair waving in the high-altitude wind and sunglasses over their eyes which shielded them from the Sun’s fierce glare, the threesome cut an impressive figure.
“Director Fury,” a middle-aged man greeted respectfully once they walked inside through the glass doors.
“Agent Barton,” Fury nodded. Barton looked behind him and smiled at Natasha, who returned it before he looked back at the dark-skinned man.
“She is waiting for you in the conference room,” Barton intoned. Fury nodded and started to walk ahead, leaving everyone to follow. During their walk to the conference room, Bruce looked around the hellicarrier and he had to admit that this was impressive. Although that was to be expected given what SHIELD was.
Fury put his palm on the door and he watched the scanning as the door slid open. He saw her before even entering.
Diana Kent was sitting behind the table looking as glorious as ever, and Bruce couldn’t help but marvel at the fact that this woman was decades older than him and yet looked as young as Natasha.
“Your Highness,” Fury bowed his head respectfully, followed by Barton. The others stood behind in silence.
Diana laughed softly, “As formal as ever. Take a seat please.”
Fury sat to her right, followed by Barton on his other side. Meanwhile, Nat, Bruce and Selina walked over to sit on her left, with Nat taking the seat closest to the head of the table. Diana smiled at her daughter before looking over at Bruce. A soft look came over her face.
“You look so much like him,” she said with a smile. Bruce chuckled.
“I get that a lot.”
Diana smiled, “I’m sure you do. I heard about the incident. We tried the best we could, and I apologise for the lack of help, Mr Wayne.”
“Please call me Bruce, Mrs Kent. You’ve known me since I was a child. You don’t need to be so formal. And I appreciate all the help you could provide. I know how challenging it must have been,” Bruce replied politely.
Diana chuckled, “You tell me not to be formal, and yet you call me Mrs Kent. Diana will do just fine from now on.”
Bruce nodded.
“And this must be Miss Kyle. I’ve heard a lot about you,” Diana smiled at the dark-haired woman, who smirked at her.
“All good things I hope?” She retorted playfully. Bruce grabbed her thigh and whispered a soft “Be nice,” in her ear, before leaning away. Diana smiled.
“It reassures me a lot to know that you have agreed to work with us,” she started, before looking at Fury, “Have you told them about the plans?”
“I assumed you would like to explain,” Fury replied. Diana shook her head with a frown.
“This was your idea in the first place, Nick. You don’t need to wait for me to take charge. Speaking of taking charge, there are a few changes that will take place around here. I’ll inform you shortly, but before that,” she turned back to look at Bruce, “allow me to explain it to you.”
Bruce nodded and listened attentively to what Diana had to say. As he listened, the frown on his face grew until Diana finished. He leaned back with a sigh.
“I thought HYDRA was done in the war?”
Diana chuckled mirthlessly.
“HYDRA perfectly symbolizes its name, Bruce. Cut one head off and two more heads would emerge from the fresh wound. Over the years we have discovered so much information that leads credence to the fact that HYDRA has been operating in the shadows with such malicious intentions that it sends a chill through me.”
They watched as Diana got up and flicked the screen. The image of the Tesseract popped up, glowing an ominous blue.
“Back during the war, Schmidt thought he could harness a power source beyond his comprehension. The jewel of Odin’s Treasure Chest – that’s what he called it. It’s true origins and nature are much more obscure and, dare I say, terrifying. We managed to recover it years later, however, even we have not dared to run any experiments on it. Not until a plan was formed a few years ago.”
The image shifted to an old warehouse and Bruce noticed how there was no natural light.
“Roughly three years ago, the world started to observe radical changes – changes which, although indicating a bright future for humanity, are not without their set of challenges.”
The video of a man in a red-and-gold suit fizzing through the air as he fought against many automated androids alongside another man in a silver suit transitioned into a blonde-haired man fighting against another metallic humanoid with nothing but a hammer in his hand – one that could control thunder and lightning. Another video showcasing a man and a woman clad in blue and red spandex suits slinging webs off their hands and swinging along buildings and pillars as they fought against an overgrown lizard was followed by a video of the same pair being forced into a defensive as they fought against a massive deformed monster only to be saved when another hulking green monster arrived to fight against the former.
Numerous images of women in blue, red and gold suits slinging beams of multicoloured lights against what looked like intergalactic creatures passed through in between before Diana finally turned the screen transparent once again.
Looking at Bruce’s contemplative face, she sighed, “Those were events that took place within the last five years, and almost three years ago, we decided something. The world is changing, Bruce, and it is changing at a pace that makes me fear – fear for what the future will entail because truthfully, I don’t believe humanity is prepared for this quick transition. These events have proven that new threats are emerging and will continue to emerge at an even faster rate, and it is entirely possible that there will come a day when the one who combats it will fall short.”
Bruce sighed, “I get that. You don’t need to explain so much. Gotham was not spared either. From the likes of the Joker, Riddler, Ivy and the Croc to the latest conflict with Talia and Bane. Things are getting worse.”
Diana nodded.
“Three years ago, Nick came with two proposals. The first was to start experimenting on the Tesseract. Now, I have told him about the true nature of that artefact and how dangerous it might be. One only needs to think about Johann Schmidt. The man was never seen after he accidentally activated it all those years ago. However, I agree that the benefits are tremendous. Even if we forget the weaponry we might be able to develop with its powers, the fact that we could eradicate the problem of energy worldwide for good is a compelling reason in itself.”
Bruce nodded, “A good reason indeed.”
“His second proposal was to put together a team,” Diana stated with a glance at Fury who was staring outside the window at nothing in particular.
“A team of what?” Bruce asked interestedly.
“A team of likeminded people with abilities beyond that of your regular human. People who can come together to combat the threats our planet might face, even if it comes from outside. We are not alone in this Universe. Thinking that we ever were was the heights of narcissism from humanity, something the past has irrevocably eradicated. Although there are friendly elements in the Universe, there is no denying the fact that there exist powers that could eradicate all life from our planet on a mere whim. Combating such powers is our objective. And that is why I want you to work with us.”
Bruce listened silently, his hands clasped with both Natasha and Selina.
“The experiments on the Tesseract will commence in a month, and I fear what signals it might emit. Powers which would want nothing more than to harness that artefact for their own gain might be tempted, and it would fall on us to defend in case they do decide to attack.”
Bruce nodded. After what had unfolded in the previous few years, nothing would surprise him. However, there was one small question niggling at the back of his mind.
“What exactly is the Tesseract? You mentioned about its true nature,” Bruce enquired, a frown covering his face when Diana hesitated.
“Listen Diana, if we are to be working together, I need you to be upfront with me on matters that might be important. If that cannot be done, then I don’t think I can work with you,” he stated firmly. Diana shared a look with Fury, who sighed and fixed Bruce with a stare.
“The Tesseract is an extradimensional object of unfathomable potential. It is believed that it is a source of immense power, power that enabled the Asgardians to create their advanced technology. We do not have proof, but it can be speculated that the famed Bifrost that the Asgardians use for intergalactic travel was developed with the help of the Tesseract. However, what makes it so dangerous is the fact that it houses one of the six infinity stones.”
“Infinity stones?” Bruce asked, beyond intrigued. Beside him, the two women leaned forward as well.
“Elemental crystals bearing power beyond human comprehension. In the wrong hands, they are capable of wiping all forms of life across the universe with nothing but a flick of one’s fingers.”
Bruce’s eyes widened.
“No one knows how they were created. Some theorise that they were naturally created as a result of the Big Bang, while many believe that some cosmic entities created them to govern every aspect of existence. What we need to know is that one is on this planet, and you can rest assured that there are powers in other realms who would do anything to get their hands on it if they came to know that we possess it.”
Bruce nodded, “And we cannot allow it, because we have no idea what someone might do with it.”
Fury nodded seriously.
“Can we even harness that kind of power? If what you’re saying is true, then I don’t think our technology is developed enough,” Bruce contemplated with a frown.
“That is why we are going to do preliminary experiments,” Diana chimed in, “so far, the Tesseract has been sitting inside a SHIELD facility, entirely untouched since it was found. Only now have we decided to bring it out and experiment on it.”
“I hope you know what you’re doing then,” Bruce warned. Diana nodded calmly.
“Now,” she began, crossing her arms across her chest and leaning backwards, “I’ve told you all I could. I hope that satisfied your curiosity?”
“It certainly did,” he remarked as he leaned back, squaring his shoulders and raising his chin slightly. “I hope Nick here told you of my non-negotiable demands?”
Diana nodded.
“Your identities will not be revealed to anyone apart from SHIELD agents and other members of your team. I believe that should be enough.”
Bruce sighed before giving a nod.
“Good,” Diana smiled, “I look forward to working with you, Bruce.”

“This is the place?” Coulson asked the agent accompanying him, who nodded.
“Stay here and watch over the perimeter,” Coulson instructed before walking out of the sleek black car and walking inside the apartment complex. As previously informed, he entered the elevator and pressed for the fifth floor, tapping his foot on the floor as his eyes stayed peeled on the small LED screen right at the top-middle of the elevator door.
The elevator dinged and opened, and Coulson got out before taking a sharp left turn.
“Apartment 503, here it is,” he muttered and pressed the bell. Glancing at his watch, he waited before pressing it once again when no one answered.
“Mmm… Peter, someone’s at the door,” a sleepy female voice groaned with a grimace. The man in question did nothing but pull her closer to himself.
“Fuck the door,” he muttered, wrapping his legs around her lower body and pulling her naked arse flush against his groin. The woman moaned when she felt him knead her supple breast and nuzzle her neck softly.
The bell rang again, and Peter muttered a curse. The woman swatted the back of his hand that was holding her breast.
“Go and see who’s there,” she muttered, now fully awake.
“People can’t even let me have a lie in on a Sunday,” Peter complained as he got up and quickly donned his joggers on his naked frame. Not bothering with a shirt, he padded out of their bedroom and to the main door.
“Yes?” He asked, not too politely as he stared at a balding man in a black suit.
“Mr Parker?”
Peter gave the man a deadpan stare before looking at the nameplate affixed to the wall right on his left, before looking back at the man.
The man simply gave him a small smile.
“I am Phil Coulson from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Can I have a few minutes of your time?”
“I don’t know you,” Peter stated. The man smiled again.
“Until now. You will though.”
His senses were not warning him of any foul play, and Peter sighed.
“Wait for a few minutes. Let me tidy things up,” Peter informed the man, who nodded with a smile. He closed the door and looked inside.
They had been too wild last night. That was the only thought in Peter’s mind as he stared at the mess Gwen and he had created the previous night in the throes of their passion.
Gwen did get like that though, he thought with a grin as he reminisced the erotic striptease she had given him the night before. However, he quickly shook his head and forced himself to focus.
Webs shot out of his wrists and he pulled, sorting things out and pulling the garbage over to the trash can. Thirty seconds later and the living room was at least presentable.
“Gwen!” He hissed as he rushed into their bedroom and shook her awake.
“Wha…” Gwen muttered sleepily. Peter sighed.
“I accidentally dropped your mom’s vase,” he whispered, cringing internally. Instantly, Gwen Stacy’s eyes shot open and Peter recoiled under the fierce glare.
“You did what?” She whispered dangerously.
“I’m kidding. Get up. There’s an important looking man outside who wants to have a talk. I didn’t sense anything wrong though…” he trailed off as the duvet fell off Gwen’s body, displaying her delectable assets in all their glory.
‘Later,’ he chided himself and pulled her out of the bed before throwing her clothes at her.
“Quick. Get dressed and come out,” he instructed as he pulled a t-shirt on before walking off, leaving a flabbergasted Gwen in his wake.
Phil Coulson was patiently waiting outside, tapping his shoe against the tiled floor and staring straight at the door when it slid open and he saw young Mr Parker give him a small smile.
“Uh… Mr Coulson, was it?”
Phil nodded.
“Please come in. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting,” Peter said with a small smile and led him in, closing the door behind him. Gesturing for Phil to take a seat on the couch, he sat down and looked at him.
“Would you like something?” Never let it be said that Aunt May didn’t teach him properly. Phil shook his head with that same smile. Peter’s spider senses were still silent, making him relax slightly.
“So… you wanted to talk about something?” He asked finally.
“The organization I work for. Have you heard of it?” Coulson asked instead, earning a frown from the young man. He tried to think of it but drew a blank. It was at that moment that Gwen entered the hall and took a seat beside him.
“Hello, I’m – “
“Miss Gwen Stacy, it’s nice to meet you as well,” Phil completed with a small smile. Gwen’s eyes widened and she exchanged a look with an equally surprised Peter.
“You know both of us?”
Coulson nodded before repeating his previous question to Gwen as well. The couple shook their heads in response.
“Well, I’d be very surprised if you knew about us, given the fact that we are a secret organisation working behind the scenes to ensure world peace among other objectives.”
Eyes widened, they looked at each other once again before looking at Coulson once again. The man simply smiled.
“Oh, and there’s no need to act innocent. SHIELD knows all about your adventures. Spiderman and Spiderwoman – has quite a nice ring to it,” he remarked.
“Listen, we don’t want any trouble,” Peter began before Coulson interrupted him.
“What do you know about your parents, Mr Parker?” He asked instead. Peter shut up and looked at the man in surprise.
“What?”
“Your parents. How much do you know about them?”
To say Peter was surprised by this question was an understatement. He had been brought up by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May since he was 3, and that had been when he had last seen his parents, not that he remembered much about them. Although Uncle Ben had been very critical of his parents during his lifetime, Aunt May had been the one to console him. It had been over 20 years since they had left, and Peter couldn’t lie and say that it still didn’t affect him.
“Well,” he began in a deeper than normal voice, which prompted Gwen to quickly grab his hand in support, “I don’t have any memories of them to be honest. I was three when I last saw them.”
“Did anyone ever tell you what they did?”
Peter frowned.
“They were scientists.”
Coulson smiled, “A brilliant pair, they were. Worked directly under Howard Stark, if you can believe that.”
Peter’s eyes widened slightly.
“Let me be clear here, Mr Parker. Your parents were employed by SHIELD and they worked under Howard Stark for five years before they died in an accident alongside him and his wife in 1991.”
Coulson ignored how the young man’s eyes hardened and continued, “They were some of the best SHIELD had to offer, and now the organisation is making the same offer to you as well.”
“What do you mean?” Peter asked with a frown.
“SHIELD knows that you two are enhanced individuals. Your fights are well documented. Dr Connors, Mysterio, that wannabe Rhino and then the Abomination. Not to mention the role you two played in bringing Ben Parker’s killer to justice. And it is SHIELD’s responsibility to keep the world safe from all internal and external threats, which includes monitoring people with supernormal abilities.”
The couple exchanged a serious frown before looking towards the balding man who still sported the same smile.
“SHIELD would like to ask for your assistance with a new task force it is assembling to combat any future threats the world might face. You shall be connected to the organisation purely as consultants and would be expected to lend your support to the cause. Many other individuals have been enlisted for help, some of whom you might know of. You do read the news, I hope?”
They nodded. Coulson smiled.
“Then I believe you can deduce who I am talking about. This is my card. Discuss my proposal between yourselves and please inform me within two days. I’ll be waiting for your response.”
Without waiting for their reply, Coulson got up and walked out of the apartment, leaving a shocked couple staring at a small business card on the glass table.
Finally, Gwen broke the silence.
“What just happened!?”
Peter sighed.

“You wanna bail, Miss Potts?” Tony scooted into the stool beside her and grabbed her glass, taking a swig and looking over. As they had done the entire night, his eyes roamed over her body once again. Pepper couldn’t deny that she liked that look in his eyes, and she involuntarily leaned back to give him a better view.
His words registered in her mind and she looked around the hall. Almost half of the guests had already left, either entirely or somewhere else for some private time. Pepper couldn’t blame them. Alcohol had flowed around like breeze and the air reeked of it. A part of her was tempted to just take Tony up on his offer but there was a sliver of doubt in her mind.
She looked at him once again, unable to keep herself from glancing at the figure he cut or the desire apparent in his eyes. She knew this had been coming, and no matter how much she had tried to keep her own desires at bay all these years, she knew it was a battle she was bound to lose.
The doubt remained – one of wonder – prompting her to think of the implications and what the night ahead had in store for them.
“Let’s go,” he whispered, and Pepper had to keep a firm hold of her emotions as she walked beside him. His hand on the bare skin of her back sent shivers of pleasure up her spine, and she was sure now.
She knew Tony loved seeing her in this dress – their impromptu drunken kiss back at her birthday party was still fresh in her mind. She had expected things to develop between them all those days ago, however, Tony had thrown himself into his experiments and left her to wonder if she had simply imagined it all.
However, now as she sat in the car right beside him, hands clasped in her lap and eyes affixed on the lit-up road ahead, she knew. It was unspoken, and perhaps nothing needed to be said. She should’ve known it would be like that. Tony was never one to explicitly state these things, at least not when it concerned her.
Involuntarily, a small smile lit up her face as she leaned back and closed her eyes.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when she felt the car stop, and she opened her eyes to see the car parked inside the garage of the mansion.
“My room in fifteen?” There was something in his voice she had never heard before, and it sent a thrum of anticipation through her. She nodded and watched as he walked inside the elevator before leaving for her room.
Once inside, she quickly discarded her dress and hit the shower, washing away all the scents of alcohol and sweat before walking out. She looked down at the bed, wondering if she should put the dress back on, before deciding to only opt for the skirt, leaving the sweaty top there.
Instead, she opted for a sheer black top that had a deeper cut than normal, and with the lift of her bra, it displayed a rather eye-catching cleavage. Putting on a fresh pair of stockings and the red skirt back on, she picked up a red lipstick and put it on.
Looking herself over, she couldn’t help but feel like she was dressed to impress.
In no time, she was out and into the elevator before she walked out and over to his room. The door was closed, and she stood there in silence for almost a minute before knocking.
The door swung open and her eyes were immediately drawn to his bare torso. Damn, he had taken his shirt off.
“JARVIS told me you were here almost a minute ago. I was wondering when you were going to knock,” he stood to the side and she entered, hearing him close the door behind them and walk over to the bar he had in his room.
“Wine? Whiskey?”
“Whiskey,” she replied automatically, staring at him. Tony nodded and started working on it.
“I like it,” he praised, looking her over as he handed the glass to her.
“Thanks,” she was on automatic mode as she took the glass and clinked it with his before taking a gulp.
“JARVIS, play some music,” she heard him say after a few moments before he held his hand out.
“Care for a dance?”
She nodded and put the almost-empty glass back on the counter right beside his.
In no time, she was pressed flush against his body, slowly swaying to the music. He was naked from the waist up, and she closed her eyes as she leaned back against his bare shoulder. His musky scent wafted over her as they danced.
One song transitioned into the second as they shifted positions, and she could feel her breathing getting heavier with every melody and every sway of their bodies. Her arms were wrapped around his body, chest flush with him as she rested her face in the crook of his neck. Tony pulled back and looked down at her.
“I feel this is unfair,” he whispered huskily, and she looked up at him, askance. He smirked, “I’m the only one here without a shirt.”
Her arms fell as he stepped back and looked at her. Pepper stared back at him before she remembered what she wanted. What they both wanted.
The enthralled expression on his face as her black top went to the floor was worth it in her opinion. She went back into his arms and shivered as their naked skin rubbed together. She could feel his hands freely roaming across her naked back, just as hers were roaming across his before she felt his hand travel under her skirt to cup her ass.
There was no pretending now, perhaps there never was, and she took three steps backwards. Tony looked at her with a raised eyebrow. In response, all she did was turn back and lean over, pushing her rear up before pulling the skirt down.
