“Look Mum, we all know you hold Dumbledore in the highest of regards, but there’s no denying that he is a man and can make mistakes. No one is perfect, not even God, if one even exists,” Bill smiled genially. “You-know-who is back, and we need to consider what impact it can have on Hogwarts this year.”
“It’s a difficult situation, no doubt,” Arthur sighed, nodding. “We all know the truth even if the Ministry is living in denial. You all must take extra care of yourselves and each other this year. You hear me?”

He reached for a quill, intending to draft a letter to the Wizengamot. As he held the quill over the parchment, words refused to come out. What should he even write?

“Mr. Potter,” he said, his tone wavering. “I… wasn’t expecting you.”
Harry shut the door behind himself and walked over to the desk with slow, purposeful steps. He did not miss how disheveled and shellshocked the man looked and he was certain that he had watched the memory and was now reconsidering his entire existence, exactly as planned. “Minister Fudge,” Harry said coolly. “I believe it is high time we had a talk.”
Fudge stared for a long while as Harry gazed back, unimpressed. Finally, he nodded weakly and gestured to the chair.
“Thank you,” Harry said curtly. “I assume you heard my announcement this morning?”
Fudge blinked before he recalled the interview on the Wireless. He nodded slowly.

Had things been normal, Fudge’s response would’ve been filled with rage and vitriol for being asked to apologize, but he was in no state to feel any anger right now. His mind was occupied by murky, conflicted thoughts, rendering him unaware of how he should feel about things.
“One that I should’ve never been a part of,” Harry said firmly. “Did you ever hear me say anything about Voldemort’s return apart from that one time when I arrived with Cedric’s body? There could’ve been a number of possibilities. I could’ve been disoriented after the task, I could’ve been confounded or confused. Hell, I never told you anything about it. Then how did my name come forward, Minister?”
Fudge stared at Harry as if he was a fish out of water.
“I… B-But… D-Dumbledore…”
“Dumbledore said that I said Voldemort has returned,” Harry interrupted, once again ignoring how violently Fudge flinched at the mention of the name. “I never said it. You wouldn’t like anyone saying you are equally guilty of those werewolf attacks just because your undersecretary was behind it, right? Because we can compare the two events very easily.”
Fudge blanched, his mouth opening and closing silently as he tried to formulate words, failing miserably.
“But you don’t see me here blaming you, do you? No, your undersecretary did it, and she would be facing the punishment. It’s a shame I didn’t get the same courtesy.”
“You’re right, of course,” Fudge whispered in the end, his voice heavy as the weight of his mistakes pressed heavily on him. “You have my sincere apologies for dragging you into this mess…”
“And I appreciate it,” Harry replied tightly. “But I want to ask you something. What is going to be done about Dolores Umbridge, Minister?”
Fudge blinked, prompting Harry to elaborate. “She seems to have colluded with Greyback to attack the home of my relatives and also abducted those students at the end of the year. Now, I couldn’t care less about those students. I was never on good terms with any of them. But I do take offense to the attack on Privet Drive. I had to personally intervene, and even then, the entire neighborhood was wiped out, including my relatives.”
Fudge let out a shuddering breath at that.
“You know as well as I do that I was not on very good terms with my relatives,” Harry continued. “But the fact remains that they were my relatives and they did not deserve what happened to them. And let’s not forget the fact that the only reason that place was targeted was because they were hoping I’d be there and would either die or be turned into a werewolf myself.”
Fudge flinched at the description. “I don’t… I never wanted…”
“I know you didn’t know about it, Minister,” Harry said. “We wouldn’t be having this talk if you did. No matter what anyone things, I wouldn’t have any other person as the minister other than you right now.”
Fudge’s eyes widened at the admission and Harry nodded firmly. He did indeed want Fudge to keep holding the post, at least until they were more ready to install one of theirs into the office.
He could see the cogs turning inside Fudge’s head. The man was believing that he had his support now, and it was nothing to scoff at. His endorsement would indeed hold a lot of weight, even in this climate.
A desperate Fudge who seemed to be losing allies at every corner now saw the tastiest treat dangling right in front of him. It was impossible for him to not jump at the opportunity and grasp it with both hands. Even Dolores, for all her merits, could not compare to Harry Potter.
Fudge stared at Harry, feeling a strange mix of helplessness and relief. “Will you… will you help me? To set things right?”
“I’m not here to be your poster boy, Minister,” Harry replied with a sigh. “But yes, I will help you if you truly want to set things right, and I mean all things.”
A confused expression overtook Cornelius Fudge’s face as he stared at Harry who leaned forward slightly, staring him right in the eyes.
“And I believe I know how we can start, Minister.”
“H-How?” Fudge asked faintly.
“By getting you a powerful ally. More powerful than Lucius Malfoy could ever be. And considering how he’s been a no-show for a while now, it seems you could use an ally like that.”
Confusion gave way to curiosity until Fudge recognized what an opportunity this could be. He leaned forward as well, business taking precedence over his morbid thoughts.
Harry smirked to himself. He had Fudge right where he wanted him, and now, he had gotten rid of the final obstacle in his path. The words came to him with ease, and he smiled triumphantly when he saw the color drain from Fudge’s face as his eyes popped wide in shock.
“I am talking about the exoneration of Sirius Black. I’m sure the House of Black would appreciate it if you managed to give him the justice he was unfortunately denied.”
