The resolute expressions of the agents told him all he needed to know. This was a skilled team, ready for the worst.
The Quinjet settled into a small clearing with minimum thruster burn. They filed out in two-man fire teams, selectively taking out exterior sentries with skilled ICERs and micro-explosives. Within minutes they had breached the outer facility entrance.
Coulson raised his hand to halt them, studying the security monitors he had hacked into. He highlighted their objectives on the schematic - the lab Agent Barton had told them about, where Doctor Selvig was working on the CMS device they planned to recover.
The SHIELD strike team moved swiftly but silently through the underground corridors, their weapons drawn. Coulson took point with Agent May watching their six, her keen eyes scanning for threats.
They reached an intersection and paused. Coulson held up a fist, signaling his team to halt again. He pressed his earpiece, "Skye, what have you got for us?"
"Heat sigs — three tangos far ahead in the corridor, another two moving towards Selvig’s lab. No one else close by," the hacker's voice came over the comms.
Coulson quickly hand-signaled his orders. Two agents peeled off, taking up overwatch positions to cover the adjoining hallways. The rest stacked up at the lab entrance in breaching formation.

"Lab 1 secured," Coulson said calmly, examining the tech in the middle of the room. It was a standard CMS device that was in the middle of modification.
"You two, secure this,” Coulson instructed two of the agents. “May, Triplett, you're with me to extract Doctor Selvig and the Tesseract."
They moved swiftly down the cell block corridor, pausing as the two agents keeping watch around the corner held up fists to signal threats. Triplett and Coulson flattened against the walls, weapons ready while May hid behind a darkened alcove.
Three turned agents came into view, their faces stoic and their rifles held aloft. May, Triplett, and Coulson struck simultaneously, dropping them with expert ICER shots.
“What was that, Skye?” Coulson asked urgently, having missed the transmission during their attack.
“Unknown jet incoming on the opposite end of the facility, far south,” the hacker’s voice came over the comms.
"Alright," Coulson said, and the three dragged the unconscious agents into the alcove. "Let's move on before..."
Suddenly, the facility shook violently as klaxon alarms began blaring. Their eyes widened in the wake of the explosion as they barely caught their footing.
“What the hell was that!?” May exclaimed.
“Skye, sit-rep!” Coulson barked into the comms, steadying himself against the wall.
“The jet fired two missiles. The southern section is completely demolished,” Skye informed, her voice shaking slightly. “The jet has landed. Thermals show twelve hostiles, armed and armored entering the facility.”
Coulson’s mind raced. He could not fathom who had attacked the facility. It seemed there was a third party in the know, which meant there was a mole in SHIELD. Shaking his head, he forced himself to refocus.
“We can’t let whoever they are get their hands on Doctor Selvig or the Tesseract,” he said firmly. “May, get to the Quinjet and prep for immediate dustoff. Triplett, Jenkins - double time it to the main lab and secure the package and Doctor Selvig. Take care nothing happens to him. The rest of you, on me. Get your weapons out. We're cutting off those hostiles before they beat us to it.”
The teams quickly broke off, springing into action. Triplett's fire team of three quickly peeled off towards the lab housing the Tesseract and Doctor Selvig. Meanwhile, Coulson took point with the remaining five agents, heading to intercept the intruders. The facility was burning and as they turned a corner, they came face-to-face with six of the heavily armed operatives in tactical gear.
"Drop your weapons!" one of them shouted, bringing his rifle to bear.
Coulson didn't flinch. "I don't think so. Last chance to walk away."
The soldier's mocking laughter was his response, echoed by the others as they fanned out to surround Coulson's team.
Coulson's eyes narrowed. He couldn't let these hostiles reach their targets first.

"Push forward! We have to get past them!" Coulson roared over the din of combat. Smoke filled the air from discharged weapons as he reloaded.
Within minutes, they had succeeded in clearing the path as the final hostile went down. However, it did not so smoothly, The agent who had been injured succumbed to his wounds. The bullets had pierced through his armor, puncturing his heart.
Coulson grimaced as he stepped over the fallen bodies of the hostile intruders, their tactical gear making it clear they were highly trained operatives. However, the question remained. Who were these people? There was nothing on them that gave him a hint.
The sound of gunfire echoed from the west, coming from the direction of the lab that housed Doctor Selvig and the Tesseract.

Rounding another corner, they found the hostiles fighting their turned agents and Coulson’s eyes widened when the agents were gunned down. Another vicious firefight ensued and although they succeeded in taking the hostiles down, they lost another of their number.
Coulson forced himself not to think about it. They could recover and mourn the dead later. They did not stop, driving forward relentlessly toward the main lab. He knew there were still four unaccounted hostiles in the building and from the sounds of gunfire in the distance, he had a very good idea of where they were.
They ran as fast as they could, not missing how the sounds of gunfire stopped while they were en route. It made their pace even faster.
They rounded another corner and what they found made their blood run cold.
Triplett and Jenkins were crumpled against the walls, clearly injured badly from the scorched equipment and spent brass littering the floor. Multiple bullet holes were visible on their armor, blood seeping out of them.
Coulson’s eyes fell on the agent lying motionless between them and he pursed his lips, shaking his head and refocusing on the larger mission. Doctor Selvig was unconscious in the middle of the lab and he’d have thought him dead if not for the slight movement of his chest. However, he did not fail to miss that the Tesseract was nowhere to be seen.
"Sir..." Triplett coughed out through gritted teeth. "It was a three-way battle — us, the turned agents, and those unknown hostiles. We were overwhelmed..."
Coulson did not need to ask about the fate of their turned agents. Just like the others from before, their dead bodies littered the opposite corridor.
Exchanging fire from two fronts in these tight quarters, his team had never stood a chance. Coulson quickly swept the room, searching for the object they had truly come here for.
"They took the package and bugged out," Jenkins coughed.
Coulson swore under his breath. Even after all their efforts and losses they had suffered today, the Tesseract had still been compromised and taken by parties unknown. He reacted quickly and keyed his comm unit.
"May… get the jet powered up for emergency medical evac. We're coming out hot with multiple injuries.”
“What about the package and the subject?”
“Doctor Selvig is safe and with us. As for the package…” He trailed off.
“Agent Coulson?”
“We lost the Tesseract.”

Personally Thor before really getting his act together and experiencing loss always struck me like a giant golden retriever. Well meaning, but doesn't really think too much about whether or not the stuff they run into while playing is fragile. Thor was happy, everyone loved him, he loved his sister and was only ever just teasing her... but there was a lot going on that he didn't see. Him leaping immediately to her defense in the previous chapter leans that way I think.

Odin's gonna get it for sure, but I'm not certain about Thor. Could make him out to be an ignorant loghead who didn't pay much attention to how Sylvia was treated.
