Moving Forward: Chapter 25
🕑 Added 2024-04-11 16:30:01 +0000 UTC“Enter!” Amelia Bones called out, sitting behind the ornate desk in her office in the ministry. She cut an imposing figure, her glasses glinting sharply as she fixed her piercing gaze on the man who entered her office.
Kingsley Shacklebolt met her stare unflinchingly, his features set in a mask of stoic calmness.
“You asked for me, Madam Bones,” Kingsley’s deep baritone seemed to reverberate from the walls of her office.
“Have a seat, Auror Shacklebolt,” she said crisply, her fingers laced together on top of her desk. “I shall not waste either of our precious time. I have called you here, as you well know, to discuss the events that took place in Privet Drive last night.”
Kingsley Shacklebolt merely bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment. The werewolf attack had been messy and chaotic, with massive loss of life and property. He had seen the official report of the cleanup crew and knew that nothing but charred ground remained across the neighborhood by the time it was over.
He and his small contingent of Order combatants had been outclassed in every sense of the word and he did not doubt that they would have been killed if not for the reinforcements that had arrived—reinforcements in the form of people whom he did not see eye to eye with anymore.
“How the situation developed was… regrettable,” Kingsley said carefully, knowing he had to tread lightly here lest his superior take adverse measures against him and the others. “And I am aware that taking civilians to—”
“Spare me the justifications, Shacklebolt,” Amelia interrupted, her voice filled with steel. “It is not the involvement of civilians that I have a problem with. Merlin knows things have changed drastically around here and the auror department cannot keep up thanks to all the budget cuts Fudge has been imposing on us over the years.”
Kingsley was surprised to hear such a candid response and it must have shown on his face as Amelia sighed.
“I am aware of the tensions behind the scenes. The existence of the Order is an open secret and you best believe if you haven’t been fired for your involvement yet, you won’t be facing such a measure now,” Amelia said curtly and it further heightened Kingsley’s surprise. “No, it is the involvement of untrained people in a lethal situation that concerns me.”
“If I may, Madam Bones?” He asked courteously, earning a nod from the redhead. “I won’t lie. I assumed that there would be actions against myself and those who were present in Privet Drive last night.”
“Because you believe Harry Potter considers the Order an enemy and as such, he would want every bit of power taken from you lot. Given how I have decided to support him, I would agree with his proposal wholeheartedly. Is that what you and Dumbledore thought?” She asked with an arched eyebrow.
Kingsley did not see any reason to lie and he merely nodded.
A resigned smile grew on Amelia’s face as she gazed at him. “You have a very flawed vision of the kind of person Harry Potter is, Shacklebolt. He does not have any quarrel with the Order. It is Albus Dumbledore who he has issues with, and knowing him, something significant must have happened for him to turn against the former Chief Warlock.”
Kingsley frowned. He did not know about any possible slight Dumbledore could have made against Harry Potter which would turn him into a killer and truthfully, he did not believe it. He did not vocalize his thoughts or dwell on them as his boss continued.
“As I was saying, this discussion involves the civilians that were present in Privet Drive last night. Having untrained civilians insert themselves into a violent confrontation with the most dangerous werewolf out there is the height of recklessness. How you agreed to proceed with such a plan is beyond me.”
A grimace crossed Kingsley’s face as he stared at the desk in silence.
“The Order and I are certainly grateful to you for the aid—”
“And Harry as well,” Amelia interjected firmly.
Kingsley grimaced but conceded a nod. “And Mr. Potter. We are grateful, but the Order’s efforts were necessary for defending the residents of Privet Drive who—”
“Are dead,” Amelia interrupted again. “Despite his entire pack being wiped out, Greyback managed to kill them all. What do you think would have happened if he still had his pack?”
Kingsley remained silent.
“You all would’ve either been killed or turned into werewolves unless you decided to run away, which would have doomed the residents of Privet Drive anyway. That were the only options you had with incapable fighters by your side.”
“We had to—”
“Do something?” Amelia cut him off. “Or be seen doing something? Believe it or not, your decisions and actions last night were more indicative of the latter. You cannot fight against beings like Greyback and his pack of werewolves with schoolyard jinxes and hope to save lives of your people and the others.”
“What are you insinuating here, Madam Bones?” Kingsley asked firmly, raising his head to stare at her. “That we should start killing? That we should stoop to their level? The law is not there for us to take it into our hands. There needs to be a proper procedure to everything, or we would have anarchy everywhere.”
“That applies when the situation is normal, Auror,” Amelia said firmly. “Would you say the situation last night was anything short of anarchy? What procedure would you want to follow in such a situation? Arresting Greyback and putting him on trial? You seem to be forgetting that there has been a bounty on that criminal’s head for years now.”
Kingsley grimaced, having no rebuttal to offer.
“Do not be mistaken, Shacklebolt. I am not criticizing your intentions, but rather your methods. To have those with no combat experience throw themselves into the fray with needles when they need a sword is the height of tomfoolery. It is a recipe for disaster and you are lucky you did not suffer casualties last night.”
Kingsley let out a sigh as he gazed back at her.
“I agree with you that those people should not have partaken in the attack,” he began softly but his eyes slowly hardened. “But I cannot condone killing, even if it has been permitted by yourself. I hope you understand, Madam Bones.”
Amelia’s lips pursed and she nodded curtly.
Suddenly, the door behind Kingsley opened and the heavy silence that had enveloped the office was shattered by a sickly sweet voice from the entrance.
“Why, Amelia, am I interrupting something?”
Amelia’s eyes narrowed, her features instantly hardening into a scowl as Dolores Umbridge waddled into the office acting like the most important personality in the entirety of Wizarding Britain. Sitting on the other side of the desk, Kingsley felt his lip curl in distaste at the odious woman's presence.
Umbridge was clad in her customary lurid pink cardigan, a garish black bow adorning her tightly wound hair. Her bulging eyes swept the room, flicking between Amelia and Kingsley as a wide, false smile stretched her flabby cheeks.
"Surely you have better things to do than sit here, chatting amateurishly?" Umbridge simpered, her gaze lingering disdainfully on Kingsley.
Amelia's eyes flashed with barely hidden contempt. "You should remember your place and maintain decorum, Dolores. You are to ask for permission before you step foot in my office."
"Of course, of course," Umbridge tittered, waving a dimpled hand. "I'm just surprised the head of the Department for Magical Law Enforcement has time to be chatting idly when she should be working on several important cases we have at our hands instead… like… you know… finding missing pureblood scions, prosecuting criminals, dealing with fearmongers, you understand, right?"
Amelia's jaw tightened, but her tone remained clipped and professional.
“I would appreciate it if you turned around and walked back to where you came from if you do not have anything meaningful to say, Dolores. I have no time for your usual worthless tirades.”
A flicker of rage broke through Umbridge's sugary facade before she could smother it. "How very droll, Amelia."
She clasped her hands together, her beady eyes glinting with malice. "But surely you can't condone the events of last night in that pathetic muggle suburb? I've received reports of Harry Potter himself casting spells openly before countless muggles! An egregious breach of the Statute of Secrecy like that cannot be ignored, even if it is the brat who lies."
Amelia's lip curled with derision and she buried the wave of fury that arose within her at the insult to Harry. "Don't be daft, woman. I was present and dealt with the situation myself. No muggles were exposed to magic. I don’t know where you get your information from but I’d advise you to wise up and refrain from throwing unfounded accusations around. You never know who might take offense and pursue action."
"But Potter—" Umbridge tried to interject, but Amelia held up a quelling hand.
“Is a wizard of age and it is well within his rights to use magic anywhere he wants under the purview of the Statute of Secrecy. He shall not be persecuted simply for defending himself and others against Greyback and his pack of werewolves. The circumstances warranted his actions.”
Umbridge puffed out her cheeks, seemingly inflating with outrage. "It seems I was right in thinking that you voided the legal warrant issued by the Improper Use of Magic office against Harry Potter this morning. Such a shame that the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement picks and chooses which laws to uphold based on her own petty biases!"
"Enough!" Amelia’s raised voice lashed like a whip, and even Kingsley found himself stunned by the vehemence in her tone. "You've overstepped your bounds, Dolores. Return to your insignificant office and mind your own affairs, lest I have you removed from these premises entirely! Do not forget you are a mere secretary, not an office holder. Stick to paper pushing or whatever you do for Fudge. Your input is neither wanted, nor requested here."
Umbridge took an involuntary step backward, her wide eyes darting between the irate Amelia and the stoic Kingsley. Her mouth worked silently for a moment before twisting into a grotesque snarl.
"We'll see just what the Minister has to say about your gross insubordination and abuse of power and authority, Amelia," she managed to hiss out at last.
Straightening her cardigan with a huff, Umbridge spun on one heel and waddled back out, the door slamming in her wake.
A tense silence hung in the air in the wake of the vile woman's departure. Kingsley watched as Amelia visibly composed herself, her face reverting as the flush of anger receded. Finally, she met his gaze once more, her expression resigned.
"Always a headache," she said at last, her tone dry. "Her blind stupidity and thirst for power make her particularly... unpleasant to deal with."
"It seems to be her nature,” Kingsley replied. “It must have been challenging to exercise restraint in not cursing her into oblivion though, Madam Bones."
An exasperated sigh escaped Amelia's lips as she took her seat once again. "Believe me, the thought crossed my mind."
She shook her head and leaned back, clearly putting the wretched encounter behind her. Putting on a strict face, she leveled her gaze at Kingsley once more, “The operations of the Order cannot stop, and I understand it. But any further instances of civilians going out unprepared will not be tolerated, Auror Shacklebolt.”
It was not a request, and Kingsley understood that. He nodded slowly, a resigned sigh escaping him.
It seemed there would be a while before the Order could walk out into the field of battle. All they could do now was keep an eye on the Department of Mysteries for any Death Eater infiltrators and work on recruitment.
With a nod, Kingsley turned around and left the office, leaving the redhead on her own.
“Something needs to be done about that toad,” she whispered under her breath. The vapid woman had gone behind her back and gotten a warrant issued against Harry. Although it would not have gone to trial without her approval, she would not put it past her and Fudge to bypass her authority.
The woman was targeting Harry now and there was no way she was letting her conspire against him like this.
Her thoughts shifted to the young man in question and the reminder of what had happened this morning. That dream had been so vivid and she had been feeling the sensations it had induced deep within her even after waking up. If that was not surprising, the fact that she had been sent over the edge just from a dream was shocking in its own right.
The familiar tingle shot through her core as she recalled that intense dream and Amelia could not hold back the sigh that escaped her.
“This ritual is too damn powerful,” she whispered, flicking her wand and locking her office as she spread her legs apart.

The entire house had woken up and they sat at the breakfast table together.

As Sirius ran his eyes across the table, he shook his head, still having a hard time believing that his godson was involved with so many women, and all had joined in within the past few weeks. He knew about the ritual but it still astounded him to witness its effects.
The conversations taking place around the table were interrupted when Astoria threw the newspaper on the table, shaking her head.
“Bloody idiots,” she muttered.
“Something interesting in the Prophet today?” Nat asked with a smile as she gazed at the young witch.
Astoria merely gestured toward the paper with her head, prompting Daphne to reach out. She unfurled it in front of her, letting everyone see what was so interesting.
The front page of the newspaper featured a full moving picture of the carnage that had unfolded the previous night in Privet Drive. The charred and blackened ground oozed fumes, painting a pretty gruesome sight as the aurors traversed through the site.
Above the picture was a flashy headline, proclaiming WEREWOLF TERROR! GREYBACK TURNS THE LAND GREY!
“The folks at the Prophet must think they’re so funny,” Cassie remarked dryly.
“Dumbasses,” Tracey rolled her eyes. “Anything interesting in the article?”
“Nothing but speculation,” Astoria replied before Daphne could start reading. “Who showed up apart from the aurors to fight the werewolves, that sort of thing. They got no clue about you guys or the Order.”
“Surprising though that you didn’t go after them, Harry,” Andromeda remarked, gazing at the emerald-eyed wizard. “The Order,” she clarified at his raised eyebrow.
“Makes no sense,” Harry shook his head. “Dumbledore’s the ringleader, and he’s the arsehole. Those guys don’t concern me. I trust Amelia to handle the matter.”
“Here’s hoping Auror Shacklebolt heeds her warning then,” Daphne stated, buttering up her toast. “Something tells me Dumbledore’s not gonna listen though.”
“Then I’m afraid we’d have to do something about it,” Harry said curtly. “Nothing lethal though. They’re good people, they just put their faith in the wrong person.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, unaware that a similar discussion was taking place miles away.

The mornings were always loud in the Weasley household and today was no exception. The Weasleys were all present in the Burrow, all but two. Charlie was, as usual, in Romania, tending to his dragons while Percy, who had left his family months ago, had yet not returned. On the well-worn sofa sat Hermione with Ginny and Ron on either side of her as a debate raged around them.
The topic of the debate was glaring at them from the front page of the Daily Prophet and Hermione pursed her lips as she gazed at the newspaper once again.
They had received news of what had truly transpired only minutes ago, and as expected, Molly Weasley was firmly calling Harry’s actions morally wrong and how ashamed she was of the person he was becoming.
Arthur Weasley, ever the peacemaker, remained silent as he held his wife in her seat, able to hold her in place but not capable of making her shut up. It wasn’t as if he could cast a silencing spell on her just like that.
Ron was in two minds about it. On one hand, he agreed with his mother about Harry’s actions while on the other, he approved the massacre of werewolves who had destroyed so many lives over the years. Undecided, he continued doing what seemed the best to him. His mother’s cooking tasted as brilliant as always and he reached out, grabbing another fresh bun of flavored bread from the table.
The twins were fully supportive of Harry’s actions, calling it necessary and how it was about time someone gave those ‘filthy murdering mutts’ a taste of their medicine, much to their mother’s shock and outrage.
Meanwhile, Bill Weasley, the oldest child interjected at times but overall, he let the debate rage around him as his mother chided her twin sons for believing that killing was in any way the right thing to do, irrespective of the situation.
Bill agreed with Harry’s method although he too believed the young man had gone too extreme with his crusade against the dark forces. Subduing their enemies and defeating them was enough in his opinion and if it took lethal force, it was fair game as long as they did not stray into the dark territory. Casting unforgivables and dark magic was not the solution in his opinion but they could not let the Death Eaters just keep killing them without retaliating.
Ginny exchanged a glance with Hermione and she did not like the conflicted look on the brunette’s face. Tuning out her mother’s shouts, she grabbed Hermione’s hand and pulled her firmly behind her. Ron glanced up curiously but quickly went back to what he was doing and no one else paid them any attention as they walked up the stairs. As they reached her room, Ginny pushed Hermione in before she shut the door behind her.
“Well?” The redhead asked with a raised eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you agree with my Mum.”
Hermione stayed quiet and averted her eyes, earning a disbelieving stare from the redhead.
“Seriously? After all he’s done for you over the years, this is how you repay him? Turning your back on him? Did you learn nothing last year?” Ginny hissed, grabbing Hermione’s shoulders.
“You don’t understand, Ginny,” Hermione sighed. “I want to support Harry but… how is killing people right?”
“They are not people!” Ginny growled. “They are animals! Disgusting animals who find it funny to destroy lives! Filthy animals who deserve to be put down before they cause any pain and suffering! By calling them people, you are insulting all those who want nothing but to spend their lives quietly with their loved ones.”
Hermione still looked unconvinced and Ginny gritted her teeth.
“I see… So you’ve made up your mind then,” she hissed. “Dumbledore’s bloody gospel must taste very sweet, eh?”
She pushed Hermione away, sneering.
“This just proves you never deserved to be with Harry anyway,” Ginny continued, glaring. “Good thing you never tried anything with him, or he would’ve been so hurt seeing your true face. He still might.”
“Ginny…” Hermione pursed her lips. “Tell me something. Where will it all stop? Where will Harry stop? He killed dozens of werewolves last night… people who are suffering and could’ve been helped. Tomorrow, it would be normal witches and wizards. Where will you draw the line?”
“Maybe I won’t!” Ginny hissed. “I know Harry, and I know he would never do something to hurt an innocent person. Everything he does is for others, no matter what it is. I thought you understood him, but I guess I was very wrong.”
Hermione remained silent, earning another sneer from her.
“Stay like this,” Ginny spat. “Stay like a pacifist girl in a closet who doesn’t know how to do something when it is necessary. You would’ve been a burden for Harry anyway, holding him back from doing what’s important.”
With a final parting glare, the fiery redhead slammed the door behind her as she walked away, leaving a silent Hermione standing in the middle of the room, her mind filled with turmoil.

The roaring fire cast a warm, dancing glow throughout the cabin as Harry poured two generous glasses of rich cabernet. His lovely lady lounged on the plush sofa nearby, long legs tucked beneath her as she watched him with hooded eyes.

Hermione is still under the belief that the adults (Dumbledore) know what's best. It's going to take something drastic for her to change that. As for Molly, its reversed. She lost two brothers (Fabian and Gideon) so she's willing to let Dumbledore's actions (and inactions) dictate her and her family as long as they as "safe".
