“Alright. I’ll give you a brief rundown then,” Harry replied. “Fair warning though, I don’t know everything either. Nat will fill in if I miss anything.”
Natasha nodded.
“SHIELD was founded in the aftermath of the war by three people you know pretty well. Chester Phillips, Howard Stark, and Margaret Carter,” Harry began, pausing when Steve inhaled sharply at the latter’s name. “Yeah, you have my apologies that you missed out on so much with her.”
Steve nodded thickly, motioning for him to continue.
“Right,” Harry said, exchanging a look with Natasha. Together, they told him about the advancements the world had made, particularly in politics and technology, and how society had changed. “Why does it seem like you speak from experience?”

“Also, if you want to work for SHIELD, you are free to, but don’t let anyone pressure you into joining them,” he said firmly. “You’ve fought for multiple lifetimes and I think you’ve earned yourself a nice life of rest or travel, whichever you prefer. But something tells me you’d be itching for a fight soon enough. Warriors are built like that. Still, working for SHIELD should be your decision and because you want to, not because it is something expected of you.”
“Don’t you work for SHIELD as well?” Steve asked curiously. Harry chuckled.

“What else happened?”
“Loki used this scepter to warp minds. That was how Barton and Selvig were compromised,” Fury replied.
“You seen any changes in their appearance when it happened?” Harry asked interestedly. Fury frowned as he tried to remember.
“The eyelids turned black, that’s all,” he replied. “They had full sense of their surroundings and intelligence. It’s just their allegiance that was subverted.”
“A modified variant of the Imperius,” Harry whispered under his breath so that only Natasha and Maria could hear. “What else?” He asked.
“Nothing much,” Fury sighed. “Loki attacked us. We fought, or tried to. The facility was set to self-destruct. It was meant to take everyone down, but they managed to escape thanks to Agent Barton. Agent Hill here tried to take them out and she barely survived.”
‘Even with the powers, Maria?’ Harry asked telepathically. The woman sighed and gave him a small nod.
“Any clue where they might be now?” Harry asked.
“None,” Fury replied before his eyes focused firmly on him. “We need Doctor Banner here, Potter.”
“And what do you need him for?” Harry asked curtly. The situation might be dire but there was no way he was just handing Banner over. He had taken responsibility for the man and he would see it out.
“Doctor Banner is the biggest name when it comes to Gamma radiation. The Tesseract emits the same radiation. He would be invaluable in helping us track its location.”
Harry pursed his lips as he drummed his fingers on the table. Fury’s reasons were perfectly understandable and they did need to find the Tesseract as soon as possible.
“Alright, Fury. I’ll see to it. What’s the plan?”
Fury stared at him and steeled his fingers on the table. Leaning forward, he replied, “We are going ahead with the Avengers Initiative.”

“The project was scrapped for good reasons, Nick,” he said firmly. “You know as well as I do that there is no way this would work out if everyone is thrown together in a mixer. Think of something better.”
“I am all ears if you have a better idea, Potter.”
Harry stared at Nick for a while. He knew who all were proposed to be on this team. Rogers, Stark, Banner, and himself. There was no way the Hulk was getting out.

Fury frowned.
“What is it?”
“Banner will not enter the field of battle. His help would be limited to what he can provide in the lab. He is a physicist and he will remain as such.”
“And that is the price for your cooperation, I believe?”
“It is,” Harry nodded. He was on good enough terms with both Stark and Rogers and he believed the three of them were enough to take care of any issues they might face.
“I agree,” Fury replied. “I want you to bring Doctor Banner over to the Helicarrier ASAP. The lab is already set up for him.”
“Yeah, I think not,” Harry snorted. “You seriously expect such a volatile creature in that flying contraption, Nick?”
“The most secure place is where the strongest will be to protect him.”
“Your statement needs a minor correction, Nick,” Harry replied. “The strongest will need to protect others from him if something goes tits up. No, Banner will be doing this from a remote location where no one can reach him and all we need is constant communication with him.”
Fury gave him a dead-eyed stare for a long moment.
“You don’t have to bother with anything, Nick. Just send over the lab equipment you’ve got set up in that Helicarrier over to my apartment and I’ll get him sorted out. You get the info, Banner stays safe. Win-win for everyone.”

“Fine, Potter. We’ll do this your way. No Doctor Banner on the team, and he will stay in this remote location you speak of. But keep this in mind. If Doctor Banner gets compromised or something else goes wrong, I’ll hold you responsible.”
Harry snorted but nodded. Fury gave him a parting look as he walked away.
“We’ll get him back, Nat,” Harry took her hands and squeezed gently. The redhead nodded.
“Where do you plan to set up this lab?” She asked.
“What lab?”
“The one Doctor Banner will be using to track down the Tesseract,” Maria sighed.
“Oh,” Harry chuckled. “No worries. Just have it moved to the apartment. There’s no need to trouble Banner’s beauty sleep.”

“SHIELD does have his blood, right?”

“Good,” Harry nodded. “I can get it done.”
“How long will it take?” Natasha asked eagerly.
“Well, depends on the distance,” Harry replied. “We don’t share any connection so it will take a bit of time. If he’s nearby then a minute or two. However, it might take hours if he’s thousands of miles away from here.”
“Still better than whatever time it would’ve taken Doctor Banner to locate the Tesseract.”
“Yeah,” Harry muttered. “It would be best if Barton is near the Tesseract. Would save us the hassle. If the Tesseract is somewhere else… well… we’ll have to either wake Banner up or wait for Loki to play his hand.”
“Her hand,” Maria corrected.
“Say what?”
“Loki is a female, Harry,” she sighed. “She’s also Thor’s sister.”
