A Familiar Bond: Chapter 17
🕑 Added 2023-08-17 16:30:01 +0000 UTCA swirl of colors greeted her as her eyes opened and Daphne stared around in wonder. It was as if an entire palette had exploded into a shower right in front of her eyes, shrouding everything around her in an ethereal luminescence.
She slowly stood up and not even a second later, her body lurched forward.
“Damn…” Daphne got out, and as abruptly as she was sent forward, she came to a stop.
“What is this place?” She asked herself. It was as if she was floating in the air as a scene played out in front of her.
She saw a young boy of perhaps four or five diligently drawing. Curious, she walked closer to see what he was drawing.
It was a drawing of a family of four. Nothing was outstanding about the artwork. There were four stickmen, two bigger than the other two. One of the bigger ones was undoubtedly a female and all four were standing close together in front of a house with the sun out in the sky behind them, smiling.
Suddenly, the boy slammed his palms on the table and grinned. Daphne’s breath hitched when she saw his eyes. Those shades of emerald were unmistakable.
Realizing she was watching Harry’s life as he had told her before they did the ritual, she watched as he stared at the picture with a large grin. She felt herself smiling at the sight of how happy he looked.
“Okay, everyone come forward to submit their drawings.”
Daphne suddenly looked up and saw the scenery around her expand. It was a classroom now, and she saw little kids going up one by one to show their drawings to the class.
When it was Harry’s turn, she saw he looked apprehensive as he walked forward and showed it to the teacher. The teacher looked at the drawing and smiled.
“Very good, Harry. Is this your family?”
Harry smiled at the teacher and nodded.
“Go on, show the class what your family looks like.”
At the teacher’s encouragement, Harry turned around and showed the drawing to the rest of the students who clapped as they had done with every student before him.
Suddenly, the surroundings morphed around her and she found herself in front of a modest house with a well-maintained garden outside. She followed Harry inside as he pulled the door open before he was suddenly pushed aside by another child.
The child turned to look at Harry who had fallen and stuck out his tongue mockingly. Daphne immediately knew this child was a menace.
“Mum, mum! Look! I made this picture at school today!”
Daphne walked inside and saw a young woman in her mid-twenties hugging the pudgy boy lovingly.
“Oh my precious Dudders, is this our family? It’s so beautiful!”
Daphne looked at the drawing the woman was holding and frowned. Unlike Harry’s drawing, this one had only one child.
She was wondering why the child did not include Harry in his drawing when she saw Harry come in with a beaming smile on his face, the drawing held aloft in his hands.
“I drew our family too, Mum!”
Daphne smiled at Harry’s enthusiasm as he beamed at the woman, and smiling, she turned to look at the woman. Her smile turned into a frown when she saw the woman looking at Harry with an ashen face.
The expression transformed into a glare in no time and Daphne watched in surprise as she slowly stood up. She walked past the pudgy boy toward Harry and Daphne had a foreboding feeling. Something was wrong.
Daphne could only watch in abject shock as the woman backhanded Harry so hard he collided with the wall with a cry.
“What did you call me!?” Daphne saw the woman towering over Harry with rage before she bent forward and grabbed a weeping Harry by his hair, coaxing a cry from the child. “I am not your mother, you freak! Don’t you dare ever call me that! You hear me?”
Daphne watched in shock as the woman roughly grabbed Harry by the face and glared at him with utter loathing.
“You are nothing but a dirty little freak. And what is this?”
Daphne saw the woman snatch the drawing out of Harry’s feeble hands and look at it with a sneer.
She recoiled when the woman slapped Harry once again across his face. His light skin had turned an ugly share of pink and there were marks of the woman’s hands on his cheeks.
“You think yourself part of our family!? You dare, freak!”
She slapped him again.
“You will never be one of us. You are unnatural. You will never corrupt good people like us with your devilishness!”
Daphne could do nothing but watch, her rage mounting with every second as the woman threw Harry roughly against the wall as if he were a sack of grains before she roughly tore the drawing and threw the pieces in the trash. She turned around and her face morphed into a loving smile as she looked at the pudgy boy who was staring at everything with wide eyes.
“Come, Dudders. You don’t need to think about freaks like that. I’ve made your favorite pie.”
“Pie!”
Daphne watched with a sense of detachment as the boy shouted ecstatically and latched onto the woman who gave a weeping Harry one final glare and walked out of the room.
“Hehe, freak, I’ll tell everyone about it!” The boy laughed at the weeping Harry and ran out of the room behind his mother, crying out “Pie! Pie!” repeatedly.
Firmly keeping her tears in check, Daphne walked toward where Harry was weeping and slowly reached forward. She knew it would happen, but she still felt a sense of loss when her hand phased through him.
Before Daphne could catch her bearings, she was once again thrown forward and a yelp escaped her when she came to a stop.
She watched, horrified, as memories of Harry’s childhood played out right in front of her eyes.
She watched him grow up, and she watched him stay friendless. She watched him get bullied by none other than his cousin and his group of chumps and she saw how they didn’t let anyone approach him, making him stay alone all the time.
She watched his first bit of accidental magic – when he was running from his cousin and the others. He suddenly apparated to the roof of the school, and she felt his confusion over what happened.
She witnessed the meeting between his aunt & uncle and the principal of Harry’s school and the fearful looks on their faces as Harry stood to the side, eyes downcast. It physically hurt Daphne to see him like that. His vibrant emerald eyes were never shining after that incident with his aunt.
She watched how he grew up inside that cupboard under the stairs, how he was made to slave around the house like a house elf, how he was abused by his family both physically and emotionally, and how he took it all without ever retaliating.
Daphne was heartbroken as years passed in the memory, watching how lonely Harry had grown up. She could only wonder how he had turned out such a wonderful young man.
Harry was thirteen now, and as was usual for him, he was slaving away at his house. The sight had become depressing for Daphne now and all she wanted was for it all to end.
That horrid woman had asked him to clean the attic while she and her family went to some event.
The routine went the way it always had, with Harry manually cleaning everything. It was while he was sorting out several cardboard boxes when his eyes, and consequently Daphne’s, fell on something peculiar.
One of the boxes had the words ‘Potter’ written on them.
Daphne’s eyes widened, and so did Harry’s, who gingerly reached for the box. The moment he made contact, the box glowed before it opened on its own, taking Harry by surprise. He stepped back in apprehension before slowly reaching forward and looking into it.
There were a few letters on top of a massive pile of books and other items such as more boxes and a few pouches.
Daphne read those letters with Harry and by the time they were done, he was crying his heart out as the letters lay crumpled on the dusty floor. Daphne could do nothing but stroke his back even though she couldn’t touch him.
The letters were from his parents to be opened by him in case they died during the war, and for the first time, Harry got to know that his parents were great people who loved him wholeheartedly, as opposed to the fabrication he had been told about them.
It was the first time Daphne saw his rage. His accidental magic lashed out, leveling the entire attic apart from the letters and the cardboard box that contained them.
She watched as Harry stared around himself with wide eyes, disbelieving the destruction he knew he had wrought upon the attic. Everything that belonged to the Dursleys had been destroyed.
The letters had enough information to make him understand that he was a wizard, and Daphne watched as he took the box with him to the living room and over the next two hours, he went through every item. There were his parents’ rings inside a box, the keys to three Gringotts’ vaults, and several journals that belonged to his mother who kept them to record her Hogwarts life.
He took the time to read the one that covered her beginnings in this new world, and even she was surprised to know that his mother had been a childhood friend of Professor Snape. She wondered why the man loathed Harry if that was the case.
Harry’s mother was a meticulous woman, and Daphne understood as much when she saw the sheer amount of details she could fit in while writing her experiences. She detailed how she had first visited the Leaky Cauldron near Charing Cross which led to Diagon Alley and how the visit unfolded. She also wrote about her introduction to Hogwarts and how bothersome she found James Potter and his group of prankster friends, something that amused Daphne and by the looks of it, Harry as well.
Once he read the first journal, he put it away before looking at the other items inside the box.
There were two pouches containing several hundred galleons and Daphne saw they belonged to his parents. She deduced someone must have harvested everything important in the Potter cottage after that night of Halloween.
There was also a bottomless bag that Harry found during his inspection, staring at it interestedly for a few moments. She knew he had no idea what it was in the beginning, but the way his eyes widened when he pulled out a large trunk out of it – a trunk that had no business fitting into such a small bag – he knew it was a special bag.
Daphne saw him put everything inside the bottomless bag before she blushed when he started taking his clothes off. She averted her eyes for a few moments and turned around to see he had discarded those baggy, hand-me-downs and was now dressed in a form-fitting shirt and jeans that must have belonged to his father. By the look of wonder on his face, Daphne realized the clothes must have shrunk to fit his thin frame – something he must not have expected.
He stuffed the bottomless bag roughly in his pocket before he looked around the house. Daphne saw him close his eyes and in no time, the house started shaking from the inside. She realized he must be reminiscing everything that had happened to him in this house and what he had discovered today.
A shockwave with Harry as its epicenter destroyed everything inside the house and Daphne watched in shock. The sheer power he could command just from his will was scary.
Debris decorated every inch of the house’s interior. Everything but the walls had been reduced to worthless trash and Daphne felt a sort of passive vindication at the end of it. Those assholes deserved much worse.
That was the day Harry left the Dursleys for good. Daphne had no idea what became of them, but she hoped they suffered.
Daphne witnessed how his life transformed for the better once he left the Dursleys. He had visited Diagon Alley the first chance he could, utilizing the information contained in his mother’s journals. Gringotts was an easy affair, and it came as no surprise to Daphne when she laid her eyes on the Potter vaults. The family was loaded, and their investments had only boomed after the war.
The issue of accommodation had been sorted out quickly. He began staying in the Leaky Cauldron. The barman, Tom, had been very helpful in that regard.
Daphne watched him go about his life, and she realized just how he had become such a capable wizard. Harry had always been resilient. His rough childhood had shaped him. He devoted himself to studying magic. Money was not an issue, and he leafed through books at a furious pace. He never used any magic, but he made sure he understood what the spells were, how to cast them, and how to best apply them.
He was free of the burden that the Dursleys were, and as such, he was steadily growing into the wizard he would one day become. The wizard she had come to admire so much.
Dumbledore also visited him. The old man had been informed by someone he placed near Privet Drive that the Dursleys’ home had been trashed and that Harry had not been seen for a while.
It was the first time Harry had met the old man, and safe to say, the meeting had gone exactly how Daphne had predicted once Dumbledore told Harry it had been him who had sent him to live with the Dursleys.
Harry had raged at the old wizard, who could only apologize, ashamed that his actions had damned him to a childhood of abuse.
The old wizard had tried to explain why he had done it, and although Daphne understood the reasons, it did not mean she forgave Dumbledore entirely. Harry had been abused in that house, and no child deserved to grow up like that.
Daphne had to admit that she was slightly confused that despite everything Dumbledore had done, Harry still respected the old wizard. It was when Dumbledore started to help Harry every step of the way, be it imparting knowledge or guidance or coming to his aid whenever he needed it that Daphne realize why it was like that. The old man was repenting for his lapse in judgment and inaction, and she could respect that.
She watched his initial days at Hogwarts and how he remained by his lonesome self every time. She saw his confrontations with Quirrell in their first year and the Basilisk and the shade of Tom Riddle in their second year, and every time, she watched her interactions with him in the infirmary with a soft smile on her face.
She watched how he and Valerie met and when they did the ritual, and the moment Harry dived into Valerie’s life, she went with him. She saw how Valerie had grown up, how she had been manipulated and sold to servitude, how she had lost her will and had to do the monster’s bidding, and how she had suffered in Azkaban. She witnessed the woman’s life afterward and how she came with Harry, intending to kill him, only for him to inadvertently save her from her miserable fate.
That was not all that happened though. Daphne had lived their lives with them, and as such, she knew everything they knew as well. That included the spells they knew and other magic they had studied.
Daphne felt as if she had studied all those advanced spells all her life, and she had a feeling that she would be able to cast them if she tried. Proficiency would take time, but the knowledge was there in her mind.
Memories shaped a person, and there was bound to be some influence of Harry and Valerie on her.
His feelings were open to her in all these years she had spent in his mind, and she knew without a doubt how he felt about both her and Valerie.
Fleur was new, and she felt his attraction to her. Not to mention Valerie’s attraction for both her and the veela, and after immersing herself in the memories, Daphne felt her attraction for both the woman increase as well. Things were exacerbated further when she saw every time Harry and Valerie fucked or when Harry and Fleur played with each other the night before. Harry was very relieved to see that she had grown up as a proper daughter of a pureblood house without any hardships and was a wonderful person. The compassion she showed for the Greengrass house elf was enough to prove it to him.
He felt how intrigued she was with him when they first met, and how she used to observe him from a distance during their second year. When they met after the Chamber incident, he felt how she wanted to say so many things to him but could not muster the courage to. Instead, she kept it all inside her. That was the first time he came to know that she felt insecure in front of him. She felt that she was not worthy of being his friend, which Harry thought was bullshit.
He watched how she kept observing him throughout the year, realizing that she had fallen for him, and how after their second year she devoted herself to strengthening herself. The Greengrass family library became her haven and he observed her practicing her magic whenever she could.
Harry had to admit that she was a very formidable witch, capable of giving him and Valerie a challenge now that she would have seen their memories as well.
He felt her disappointment when she saw him with Val in their third year, and he saw how she swallowed her feelings and kept to herself, doing nothing but working on herself.
As the year ended, he felt her astonishment when the fact that Sirius was innocent was broadcast for the entire student populace to see.
When the fourth year began and he was announced as the Hogwarts Champion for the Triwizard Tournament, he relished in the feeling of pride that swelled within her as she clapped with a smile.
Although he had seen the memory from Val, the sight of her defending him so vehemently and thereafter destroying Malfoy did not fail to bring a smile to his face.
However, that smile quelled down somewhat when he felt the sheer magnitude of emotions that overrode his mind when she began talking about him to Tracey and Astoria. The love she felt for him coupled with the feelings of regret, loss, hopelessness, and forced contentment she subjected herself to as she decided to accept his relationship with Valerie and how she would wait for him made his love for her intensify even further. He almost teared up at how much she kept bottled up inside her, and he vowed to never make her feel as if she did not have his love.
This was a woman who had secretly loved him for years and who had been ready to let him go because she believed he had found happiness elsewhere. The least she deserved was his utmost dedication and faith.
Not for the first time, Harry thanked the fact that he had three lordships and he had been able to meet three brilliant women who were all so welcoming and understanding.
He felt her embarrassment when she came to know he knew about her, and her shock when he kissed her. He felt the slight dilemma she had when she was about to tell him about her father, and the belief she had in him that he would not care.
Finally, he observed, amused, how she slowly became intrigued with the fair sex to the point where she freely made out with Val when he had been with Fleur, and how assertive she could be. The sight of the two beauties kissing each other sensually was enough to make him feel aroused.
The memory trip ended with Daphne reciting the words for the ritual and he opened his eyes just in time to see her open her eyes as well. Her loving smile made him grin, and he wasted no time.
