Hydrus Black - chapter 23

"Purest of blood," Snape intoned, looking quite irritated. The door to the Slytherin common room slowly opened, though Snape's attention was more focused on the unimpressed look that he was getting from Professor McGonagall. "What?" He drawled, raising an eyebrow.
"Purest of blood?" She repeated, still looking very unimpressed. "That is your password?" She asked, sounding even less impressed.
"Only for this month," Snape said stiffly before he walked into the common room with Professor McGonagall following behind him. As soon as they got inside they saw various students from various year groups scattered around, it didn't take them long to find the first years, all grouped in a corner. Nott and Malfoy were engaged in what looked to be an intense chess match, and Crabbe and Goyle were stuffing themselves with sweets along with Millicent Bulstrode. Blaise Zabini appeared to be having some sort of conversation with Parkinson and Davis, meanwhile, Greengrass was sitting on a sofa whilst reading a book, and Black was lying down on the same sofa with his head on her lap as he read from his own book.
It didn't take long for the Slytherins to realise that they now had two teachers in their common room, they quickly stood up and waited for them. Snape was unable to prevent himself from smirking at Professor McGonagall, who he doubted would ever hold the same amount of respect that he held in Slytherin, she definitely didn't, not with those brash Gryffindors she was charged with. Professor McGonagall ignored him and stepped past him to address the students.
"Black, Nott and Malfoy, step forward," She ordered, the three students quickly walked forwards and stopped in front of her. Snape's eyes narrowed slightly as he saw Black stand in the middle while Draco stood at his right with Nott standing on his left. "There have been some grave accusations made against you three,"
"That sounds grave," Hydrus said dryly, earning an amused look from various Slytherins in the room. "May I please ask what exactly we are being accused of?" He asked in a respectful voice. Professor McGonagall stared at him for several seconds before she began speaking.
"Neville Longbottom had been brought to the infirmary, again," She stated.
"Hmm," Draco let out an amused noise. "Who did he attack this time?"
"Quite the opposite, in fact, Mr Longbottom is claiming that you three attacked him," She replied.
"Us three?" Theo scoffed. "He's clearly lying, Professor,"
"Is that so, Mr. Nott?" Snape spoke up. "Then I'm sure you wouldn't mind explaining where you were two hours ago," He said, directing his question and gaze to Hydrus.
"Well, Draco was here apart from a few minutes where he was in the toilet, suffering from a severe bout of diarrhoea," Hydrus began answering.
"What?!" Draco blurted out as several Slytherins did their best to not laugh. "I was not..."
"There's no shame in it, everyone gets it from time to time," Hydrus cut him off before turning back to Snape. "As for Theo and I, we were here in the common room the whole time."
"And are there any witnesses that can vouch for you?"
"Sir," The two sixth-years that they had paid earlier stepped forward. "We both saw all three of them here," One of them had said with the other one nodding along.
"Professors," Daphne spoke up. "We can all vouch for them as well," She added, gesturing to herself and the other first years.
"Didn't know you had diarrhoea, Draco," Crabbe said, sounding surprised.
"Shut it, Crabbe!" Draco hissed.
"It's alright, I had some too," Goyle spoke up.
"Fuck off, Goyle!"
"That will be ten points from Slytherin for swearing," Professor McGonagall told him. "So, you are saying that none of you were involved in the attack on Longbottom?" Professor McGonagall asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Why would we be? We're perfectly innocent members of society," Hydrus said with a straight face.
"If that is the case then perhaps you can explain this?" Snape said, rushing forward, dramatically grabbing Hydrus by his left arm and raising his hand. "Do these seem like the hands of an innocent member of society?" He asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he gestured to Hydrus's red knuckles.
"There's no need to touch," Hydrus sniffed before pulling his hand away. "And I should have you know that that's because of my punching bag upstairs."
"Punching bag?" Professor McGonagall asked.
"It's a bag that you punch," Hydrus explained simply. "I have one upstairs, if you want to check then feel free to head to my room and see it."
"Either way, we have proof that we were not involved, several eyewitnesses," Theo cut in.
"Indeed, innocent until proven guilty, that's the phrase, right?" Draco added.
"Very well," Professor McGonagall said stiffly. "But I should warn you now, I will be keeping a close eye on all of you." She told the three before her gaze softened slightly. "I can tell that the three of you could perhaps be some of the brightest and best that Hogwarts has ever seen, please don't waste the opportunities you have." She told them before turning and walking away, Snape glared at Hydrus for a second before he turned and followed after her. The entire common room relaxed once the teachers had left and the door closed.
"Do you hear that?" Theo told the other two. "We're bright, apparently,"
"What the hell is up with telling them I had diarrhoea?!" Draco demanded, glaring at Hydrus.
"It was incredibly necessary," Hydrus said defensively.
"Necessary how?"
"Well, I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you, Draco," Hydrus said apologetically before turning and walking back to his seat.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?!"
"My goals are beyond your mortal comprehension," Hydrus shrugged before going back to his book.
"I..." Draco trailed off, unsure what to say to that.
"Don't worry about it, Draco," Goyle spoke up. "I understand what you're feeling. Was yours really runny as well?"
"Get lost, Goyle!"

"What do you mean he got away with it?!" Ron blurted out in the Gryffindor common room. Near enough all of the Gryffindors were listening to Neville as he told them all about the attack he had suffered from Hydrus Black, not to mention the result of it.
"Exactly that," Neville huffed, rubbing his face. Madam Pomphrey had healed it fairly nicely, but it still hurt a lot. "Professor McGonagall said they had witnesses to prove they were in the common room," He added sulkily.
"What about the portraits?" Liv spoke up. "There are plenty of them throughout the castle," She added when she got several questioning looks from various members of the Gryffindor house. "Surely one of them could have seen something,"
"No," Neville sighed. "Most of the portraits don't really pay attention to students walking around, and something happened to the ones in the hall."
"What do you mean 'something happened'?" Hermione asked, sounding very interested.
"Apparently, they all blanked out and didn't see anything," Neville answered.
"That's not weird at all," A fourth-year Gryffindor commented in a sarcastic voice.
"Black must have used some dark magic to freeze them," Ron said with the air of an expert, he nodded as if congratulating himself on solving a particularly vexing mystery.
"I don't think it would be dark," A third-year Gryffindor said thoughtfully.
"Either way, he probably did it," Ron cut in before the older student could continue, not really in the mood for a discussion about magic that was obviously quite dark.
"Maybe," Neville said thoughtfully. "Still, don't know what we can do. The teachers can't do anything,"
"Well, we can," Smiled Fred and George Weasley. The Weasley twins, two of Ron's older brothers who were in their third year at Hogwarts, were a pair of identical twin brothers that had become infamous throughout Hogwarts for their pranks. While Gryffindors were mostly safe (mostly), the other houses were not, especially not Slytherin. The pair were always happy to play pranks on the house of Slytherin and never seemed to be lacking an excuse. "Oh please, mighty Longbottom, allow us to avenge you." They both said in perfect sync.
"Avenge me?" Neville blinked. "Avenge me how?"
"Let us worry about that, young Lion," One of them (Neville didn't know which) said.
"Yes, we'll get right on it," The other grinned before they both happily stood up and walked up to their rooms.
"What's happening?" Liv couldn't help but ask.
"Based on past experience, a lot of humiliating pranks," Ron smiled, quite happy for it to happen to somebody else for once.

"That is the end of class for now," Professor McGonagall said at the end of her first-year transfiguration class. "Everyone please pack away your things and go off to your next class, I would also like to remind you that your homework is due tomorrow. That will be all." She added, flicking her wand to open the classroom door.
"Pack," Hydrus and Daphne said at the same time whilst waving their wands, causing all of their things to go back into their school bags.
"Impressive, Mr. Black, and you as well, Miss Greengrass," Professor McGonagall said, having noticed their spell. "Five points each for Slytherin," She told them, the two young students respectfully nodded back to her before standing up and walking towards the exit with the other Slytherins, only to be interrupted by Hermione Granger.
"What was that spell you used?" She quickly asked, sounding quite eager.
"I beg your pardon?" Hydrus asked, as he and the Slytherins stopped and looked at her, all of them looking quite unimpressed.
"That spell that you both used," She said, gesturing between him and Daphne. "What is it?" She asked.
"Why do you want to know?" Pansy sneered. "Get out of our way, you little mud..."
"Parkinson," Hydrus said in a warning tone, cutting her off. "That will be all." He told her before turning to Hermione. "That was a packing charm. It's typically learned in the fifth year but I am related to an older student who taught us both it," He told Hermione who opened her mouth to speak again when Hydrus caught her off. "If you'll excuse me, we'll be off now."
"Go right ahead," Liv walked up, cutting off anything Hermione might have said, pulling the bushy-haired girl out of the way. Hydrus nodded to Liv before walking out with the other Slytherins following after him, all under the watchful eye of Professor McGonagall who was still sitting at her desk.
"Can't believe she's so interested in such a simple charm," Draco scoffed once they were out of the classroom and had begun walking down the hall.
"A charm that you can't do," Theo pointed out.
"You can't either," Draco reminded him.
"Shut it," Daphne said before the two could start arguing. "Irritating though she may be, at least she's interested in learning about magic."
"Daphne's right," Hydrus agreed. "She is irritating, but she does have the right idea about learning as much as you can. Magic is a gift and should be treated as such."
"She's an irritating pest," Pansy huffed. "Always raising her hand and trying to show off in class. She's just like all the other mud..."
"Don't say that word," Daphne told her with a warning tone.
"Why not?" Pansy said, not backing down. "It's what she is, an irritating little..."
"I'll remind you, Parkinson, that my birth mother is a muggleborn." Hydrus cut in, his voice was as cold as snow. "So think very carefully about your next sentence," Pansy's face froze before she looked to the others for support, Draco wasn't looking at her, Crabbe and Goyle were following his direction. Blaise and Tracy Davis looked indifferent, Nott shrugged and Daphne was clearly on Hydrus's side, letting her know that the support she wanted was basically non-existent. She huffed angrily but didn't say anything else. "Smart of you," Hydrus sneered at her just as he heard a hiss coming from his wand. Hydrus blinked just in time to see a green balloon flying towards him. In an instant, Hydrus pulled his wand out and aimed it right at the ballon.
"Impedimenta!" Hydrus cast the 'Impediment Jinx' which hit the balloon and began slowing it down enough for Hydrus to catch it using a levitation charm.
"What the hell?" Draco blurted out just before Hydrus's wand sang again, a second later a spell shot through the air and hit the balloon dead on, causing it to burst and shoot out a lot of green goo, covering the group of Slytherin students from head to toe.
"EWW! That stinks!" Draco moaned loudly.
"Disgusting!" Theo gasped.
"Qui a fait ça?! Je vais les tuer!" Hydrus growled.
"Great, they pissed him off enough that he's speaking in the wrong language," Blaise groaned.
"Fils de pute! Je vais leur casser les jambes!" Daphne hissed.
"Great, her too."
"It's French," Theo told the group.
"Oppsies," The Weasley Twins said as they came out from the corner ahead. "Anyone seen our goo?" They asked with matching grins.
"Of course, you realise that this means war?" Hydrus said, growling at the two of them.
"Good luck," The two laughed before they threw a pair of dung bombs at them and ran off.
"Oh, shit!" Hydrus gagged as the smell assaulted their noses. "You two motherfuckers!"

"What the hell is that smell?!" A great many Slytherin's demanded when the first years returned.
"The Weasley Twins!" Draco shouted angrily. "The ginger pricks covered us in gunk and dung bombs!"
"Draco, I stink!" Pansy whined.
"More than usual, yes," Theo nodded, not in the mood to listen to her. He was thankful that between himself, Hydrus and Daphne they had managed to get rid of the goo, at least most of it. The smell on the other hand was a bit too strong for them at the moment.
"I still have some in my hair!" Daphne hissed furiously as she held her hair in her hand. Hydrus stared at it angrily, almost feeling like the goo in her hair was mocking him. He furiously jabbed his wand in her direction, removing any remaining goo that was in her hair.
"I am going to revise some air-freshening smells," Hydrus growled. "Someone contact Peeves."
"Peeves, why?" Draco asked, frowning as he found a bit of goo in his shirt collar.
"They want pranks? I'm going to give them pranks!"

Great chapter. Really hoping Hydrus goes a bit above mere pranks and shows why they shouldn’t mess with him. Looking forward to the next chapter.
