The Barrow Downs also marks the first of three symbolic deaths and resurrections in Frodo's story, the second being the Morgul Blade and the third being Shelob's Lair. Each time Frodo "dies" in a sense, and is resurrected so he can continue on as the Ring Bearer. And each time he's resurrected, he becomes less Frodo Baggins.
