It was a call back to Donald Blake, Janes Ex from the 1st movie. It was a part of Thors uniform in the comics to keep his identity secret.

Yeah, aside from it being an obvious reference to Donald Blake I also feel that disguising it as an umbrella still works on some level. People might recognise him up close or just go 'wait.. is that.. Thor?', but Mjolnir would cause people to line up around the block.

The part where Skurge is using the M-16s is awesome because his scene in the comics where he was doing this is one of my all-time favorite comics moments. So cool.
