I don't remember who brought it up, but the mirror image/opposites theme this season is everywhere and it is so satisfying. Faith-Buffy, Ripper-Ethan, Giles-Gwendolyn. Adult-child. And also two secret relationships. So much tension.

The prevailing wisdom in 1998 (and the thousands of years before that) was that a 16 year old is far more adult than child and capable of taking care of themself. Add that she's the Slayer and it's really not that weird that they left her unattended - at least from a safety/maturity perspective. (Also, there was no such thing as school security in the 1990s, even in New York they were just hiring their first mall rent-a-cops around that time and the one in my school would literally just let you leave to cut class and come back because they weren't there to do anything other than respond to violence.) Caring for her emotionally as a friend is another story, and I'd lay that at everybody's feet, not just Giles.

How old is Faith supposed to be here? Younger than Buffy? 16/17? She has no parental supervision, she’s living in a motel and she wanders in and out of a school she isn’t actually attending. I know it’s probably easier for Giles if she doesn’t have anyone monitoring her activities but as much as I love Giles I feel like he should be taking more care of Faith.

I think the intervantion was a conversation that needed to happen, but i think it was unfair to dismiss Buffy saying Angel was better now. Did they forget there's a werewolf at the table who would be killing people each month if they didn't lock him up...?

I do get where everyone is coming from in the intervention scene, but I'm a bit more on Buffy's side than the rest of the gang or Joe and Kevin. Mostly because IMO Angel fundamentally is not Angelus and isn't responsible for anything Angelus did, even though they had the same body and memories and those memories cause Angel to feel guilt for Angelus's actions. So yes I get why everyone but Buffy would be skeptical of him and there is a real danger if the events that turned him back into Angelus repeat, but Angel himself is a good person worthy of trust.

Another strong episode, the dynamic between Buffy and Faith is really interesting. Poor Giles, should we start a concussion tally?

One of many things I've always liked about this episode is how well it handles the escalating tension among the characters -- as you said, rather better than Dead Man's Party did. Strong writing throughout, and a great fight between the two slayers. Dark and complex mood, conflicted thoughts... Boy we're a long way from the aura of Season 1, aren't we! Casting note: that's Serena Scott Thomas, sister of Kristin, in a fine guest-star turn as Mrs Post.

I really like the ending of this episode. As we saw in the Dead Man's Party episode, the gang relies on fights against the forces of evil to resolve their disagreements. When the chips are down, they can band together and save the day, which is great, but it's a crutch that doesn't and shouldn't always resolve their conflicts. As a result, it's interesting to see it go a different way between Buffy and Faith

- It does seem like the Council would have given Giles a heads-up that a new Watcher was coming to town (and who she was). - I like the intervention scene, and most of what they had to say to Buffy -- even Xander -- is more than fair. Xander's perspective is absolute part jealousy, but he does get some good moments. He's definitely right to go to Giles, and I love that he rejects Faith's knee-jerk assumption that Angel attacked Giles. - That said, I also understand Faith's point of view here. She doesn't know the full situation AND she saw her previous Watcher get butchered. There are certain assumptions she's just going to make.
