Per-creation billing - rapid joining and canceling
🕑 Added 2024-11-14 01:02:00 +0000 UTCHeya, I can't believe it's been more than 6 months since launch! Welcome new people and to those who have been around, thank you! I've been having a great time and I hope you have too. Some recent conversations prompted me to clarify the way my per-creation billing works since it's an older model.
Basically I've noticed that members are often warm and conversational and lovely, but I've also noticed a large portion were joining and then immediately canceling, meaning their pledge didn't make it to me. They didn't seem like people just trying to get free stuff so I sort of bit the bullet and asked them about it, and I'm glad I did! Every time I've gotten very sweet responses of people just not knowing how per-creation billing works.
With per-creation, your pledge goes to me only if you remain in a paid tier at the time I make a new post. How it works:
β For your pledge to reach me:
You join a tier > I post a finished art piece while you're joined > your pledge goes to me on the 1st of next month
β How your pledge does not reach me:
You're a free or non-member > you join a tier to see my most recent piece > you cancel or drop back to free member > your pledge does not reach me
You join a tier > you cancel > I post a new piece after you've canceled > your pledge does not reach me
When you join a tier, you're basically saying you will pay this only if you're still a member when I post my next piece. It doesn't leave your account until I do and if you cancel before I do, you're not billed at all.
β What if you like to cancel and rejoin subs every month?
If you're just worried about being charged more than you want, you can cap your payments at a set amount per month. On the screen after you join a tier you'll see a box to set a monthly maximum. You can adjust it at any time by finding me in your membership list and clicking Edit.
If you still want to sub manually, you can just cancel after I post a finished piece and your payment will process. You can rejoin immediately afterward or at any time.
I'm only giving a heads up because of the number of people who were unaware and told me that they thought they were supporting me! I'm grateful for it and I figured that there was a larger group of people in the same situation who are just quieter. I'm not upset or mad or anything and this is not meant to call anyone out at all, it's just one of those things that Patreon doesn't do a great job of explaining and sort of leaves it up to us; I figured the half-year mark was a good time to bring it up.
Thanks for listening and I hope this was informative! Feel free to shoot me questions any time and I hope you have a wonderful week π
(P.S. I know I've been making text and work-in-progress posts, which is a recent development, so just putting it out there that those are all free if you're already a paying member. Finished art only ever carries the bill. β¨)

This was a really helpful clarification! Thanks

Thanks for reading them! I wanted to be as clear as possible since it's not a common payment model

I figured thats how it worked! Cause I was confused a couple weeks ago about the transaction and I had to go back and re-read your tiers. I really do try to make sure I have something in my account cause I definitely don't understand the canceling after joining.

Don't be embarrassed! π

I intend on staying subscribed, but this explanation is very helpful nonetheless, I've been using Patreon for like a year now and this is my first time hearing this. Thank you so much!!

Patrion has a very strange subscription that doesn't charge you immediately at the time of purchase for the month, but does it on the first day. I was surprised that I was charged $8 plus commission. The bank did not tell me anything and there was no explanation. Then only found an explanation at the post office. PATRION STOP MESSING AROUND. This was my first subscription so I was disorientated, other sites take the money off as soon as you sign up.

WHAT?? oh man im so embarrassed now! i used to do this, because i have severe memory issues, so i cant easily "plan to cancel later on" and i legit thought id be billed even if i joined and cancelled! ππ patreon what the heckkk! thank you so much for making this post, i wont be doing this again! π

I was actually worried that moving a lot of my work to patreon meant that I would lose a lot of engagement and conversation and I was delighted that the quality has only gone up β¨

I appreciate it! While per-creation has saved my ass this year it's a less-used model so I imagine I'm a lot of people's first
