Yes!! I think Halsin is wrestling with his perceived ability to protect as a high-level leader (although people still obviously greatly respect him) and finding a place where he actually feels like he's making difference in people's lives. I think he's realizing it may be more grassroots than he thought and I see that reflected both in-game and in their relationship :,) aaaaaah you're making me tear up about Clover, you understand and I love your perspective. That piece of him that insists on living without the reward of life is so strong in a way that Constitution or Strength or what have you can't measure. I'm glad someone's there to catch him after so long... man I love them and also I'm glad you're here to agonize haha

Oh yeah, I think people can mistake his clear interest in not being the head leader for something with him not wanting to be a protector. Which, sure, related, but those are different roles! Also damn, things you read on the internet: "Halsin was the first person who made him think of next autumn" slaps so hard. Being in despair while still being persistent is also a very interesting concept. I think it nails down the specific brand of stubbornness a lot of survivors do have, and does remind us that hope is often treated like passive ideation. So you can lose the optimism, you can lose even often the ability to imagine more than a few moments into the future. Describing it as "twilight" is also delicious, I must say! I'll def be thinking about how that tenacity could benefit Halsin's character arc. My love for Clover has grown 3 sizes this day.

I read this last night and I showed my friend, I was like look at this, they get it. Halsin being allowed to take care of Clover and Clover letting himself be taken care of is so healing for both of them. Halsin needs to be the protector because of his love for him, but I think that ability to protect is a big part of him feeling worthy of just his role in life and finding that direction and purpose again. Clover's shrinking-violet nature around people exists right next to his dogged persistence for so long in the face of utter abandonment and cruelty, even as he doesn't expect a future, but just to survive to tomorrow. Halsin was the first person who made him think of next autumn. But Clover is the one who digs in and crawls on, even without a light at the end of the tunnel-- Halsin learning that despair should not be the death of persistence, because the light may just be too far off to see, will become very important to him. Clover met Halsin after all those years, didn't he? For Clover, though, Halsin can draw him out of that twilight and into a life he deserves. I'll also add, I really enjoy how large you literally and metaphorically make Halsin seem on paper. I'd say he's natural in a way that works so well contrasted to and in combination with Clover as well. I think there's lots of ways to address the healing Halsin needs to do, and I think letting him care for another personal is certainly one way. Clover wormed his way into my heart at the honeycomb post just because, damn like, here's someone who is so used to being alone and trying to minimize risk sticking and arm out and getting stung for it. I am big into introspection. I think consciously labeling trauma and addressing it is great. But I do adore this more organic method as well. Letting Halsin feel as a big as other people see him as. Let him be good to someone, unflinchingly. It feels very strength-based. I'd love to see how Clover in turn uses his strengths to help Halsin. The idea of a dead child clinging to life is glorious to me.
