April 2024 Update

every project i work on has a similar process: i put the skeleton of an idea together and start working, reach a point where i worry "this isnt coming together, is this thing going to be a total mess", and then it suddenly DOES come together.
this happened pretty much every season of crow cillers.. a few episodes in id feel totally lost.. "this is the season where its just gonna fall apart." but a few episodes later, something always clicked. at this point, i know to let myself trust in the process, but those early phases can still be a bit worrying.
anyway, the crow cillers finale has moved into the "oh ok i see what im doing with this story, its all coming together now" phase. now i just have to finish making it.
pushing through the tough part is important. it took a while to learn that if im not happy with a drawing, i can just keep messing with it anyway. maybe come back much later and chop it up for use in something new. sometimes i have drawings that i just couldnt make work sitting around on my ipad for weeks before i suddenly think of a way to repurpose pieces of it for something new.
when someone asks me for advice on making comics, the best i can do is "you just have to do it". if the comics bad, just keep making it anyway. maybe when its done you can add or remove scenes to make it better? if not, at least you finished it. you have shown you can do it again. the next one will be better. you have to just do it.
i dont know how i managed to put out an episode of crow cillers nearly every month for a decade, but it really did help with this. the end of the month is coming, you have to keep working on the comic even if it feels like this episode is going to be a disaster. they always ended up more or less working out in the end.
its a weird adjustment from "i need to have a crow cillers episode done at the end of every month" to "i need to just keep working on the project until its done and then put some 'whatever' up on patreon at the end of the month." when i first started putting comics online, id just share pages as i finished them. even the adjustment to working on things like lamezine was weird at first, where i had to sit on pages until the whole thing was done, working without the motivation of instant feedback. im more used to it now, having done a lot of projects like this. im making the things, just wait, people will see it when its ready. this way is probably better for my wrist too.

Thank you for sharing your reflections! I remember in the lamezine days, seeing it finally come out after you'd been sitting on some sequences for a while, I was super impressed that you'd thrown new pages in between the older ones that made the whole thing more complex and feeling like a whole. Very excited to see where you take things for the last chapter. Then for the next 10 years you can just repost the episodes with director's commentary.
