about Moria Oda writtes like this, if you fail in your dreams you become ugly, evil, negative and a bum. that's exactly what Moria is, we see the same consept with Oda drawing the strawhats if they fail their dreams. Moria is a failed pirate and dreamer, the one who totally gave up and changed his views after going in the new world. changed his crew, his ways of moving and acting, EVERYTHING. in the moment when you read the arc he is nothing, but when you know more of the story... his character has a lot into it...

also moria was the only pre timeskip villain to have layers until like kuma showed up. Crocodile is pretty generic looking for superweapon batman villain, rob lucci is just assassin guy who works for wg, arlong is pretty layered too so i'll say him before moria, Enel was just megalomaniac "god" looking for superweapon. every single one got ALL of their depth post defeat in cover stories and then in the post timeskip (crocodile SLIGHTLY before). So the hate is all just agenda, he was always interesting its just now his fighting prowess will match his story depth which for pre timeskip is probably the best we got he just is fat and ugly and lost twice
