That sort of thing happened in both the US Navy and domestically a hundred years ago. It was flat out illegal to not be straight, and in the Navy they ere trying to weed out possible homosexual elements in the service with imposters.

...it's gonna be heartbreaking if it somehow turns out that Eddie and Orlon are undercover cops and this has all been incredibly elaborate entrapment to make random drifters admit to being gay so they can arrest them on vice charges.
