There was a fan theory that Onion’s friends only came during the summer because their parents were seasonal workers and traveled from job to job. It’s never been verified but I think it makes a lot of sense. It’s the first hint that Steven was missing a lot of the human childhood rites of passages and life that he could have benefitted from which comes to a head in Future.
