Of course Johnny had to win. That was the whole point. The loss to Daniel, along with the abandonment by Kreese, pretty much ruined his life. A loss to Wolf would have destroyed him, and this wasn't that kind of show. Even with all the things he gained over the course of the show, deep inside, he still felt like a loser to himself.
