If you rewatch with directors commentary you can get Quentin Tarantino talking about the Easter eggs. These guys did a sitcom before these movies call "Spaced" featuring the woman from Sean of the Dead who led the similar group, but who weren't complete losers, the barmaid from this one, and the desk Sergent who played twins. I'm not sure how well it aged, but growing up it seemed like a bridge between standard US roommate sitcoms and Peep Show that followed on later.
