Good drama conflict is based in past experience and trauma, not in the moment senseless action. The moment where Usami is pulled away from Waguri is a great example. Subaru defends Waguri based on her own judgements and (assumed) past experiences, but Rintaro steps up because A. Usami specifically has scared her before B. He's already had to defend her from guys trying to physically harm her, he's on guard whether it's Usami or not.
