It all goes back to the school trip to Kyoto. In a way, they're miscommunicating because it's the same for them like it was for Ebina and Hayato. They don't wan't to lose what they have if they speak up about their feelings but in a way, they already lose it in a way because of the Kyoto confession. Even when they know it was fake, it's not a good feeling to see the guy you like confess to another girl. Also, they're a bunch of teenagers who are trying to discover and understand themselves.
