The show is Historical fiction. The names of characters were real people though they are exaggerated for (anime) storytelling purposes. Same with places and even some of the plot.

As someone who wrote a master's thesis on a viking related topic a couple of years ago, I couldn't really ever confince myself to watch vinland saga in case it was cringy. I'm kind of weird about anime set in western historical settings and usually try to avoid them. But I guess I give it a try now, it looks not bad so far and I'll try to be open-minded. Looking forward to your reactions!

Season one was animated by WIT studios and then for season two it was technically animated by MAPPA Studios, BUT the same team (director, writers, etc) worked on both seasons just at different studios. The series is produced by Twin Engine Productions.
