The current Empress Dowager really did a great job raising the current emperor and Jinshi. Seeing how effed up the previous set up was. That being said, it was really hard not to wince whenever they show that the late emperor looks almost like Jinshi. 😩

There is so much more to it than what people think. Anshi and the Late Emperor are two very traumatized and exploited individuals. Sadly their choices and tastes are what people will notice more until more is known to them about why they ended up the way they did

This episode makes me question the emperor’s taste statement, we see he is terrified of adult women, and can only be comfortable around young girls (the reason for this is heavily implied) and we get Anshi watching the emperor put his hand on one girl and we assume, like her its with sexual intent, but I ask is does that hand really imply sexual intent? His trauma with adult women could also correlate to trauma with sexual intercourse. His mother wants him to procreate so she takes advantage of his comfort with young girls to force him to have sex with them so that he can reproduce. I may read to much out of this, but it is interesting that there is no talk of other girls getting pregnant after Anshi, it may not have been an important detail, but she does make it a point to mention a previous pregnancy but nothing after her own pregnancy until she forces herself on him later, and that final trauma (tying in with his initial implied trauma) is what made him completely shut down and shun even his mother’s influence on him.

I wonder if this "not the daughter of the late emperor" thread will come back and whether we've already met the mother of that girl since Anshi said she was left in the rear palace. Since that incident is what led to all the doctors in the rear palace being castrated, that daughter must be older than the current emperor.

By pure coincidence given a position way above his capabilities, son to a fierce and extremely competent mother that centralized all power onto herself to protect her only living son, but in doing so taking all agency away from him forcing him into the role of powerless incompetent puppet, an emperor in name only, who is looked down upon by everyone that is in the know.

Just one thing in case you didn't catch it: the emperors brother was conceived when anshi rapes the late emperor. This ep is very heavy in topics and everything is very tragic. Basically "the world is Grey" the episode. No excuses for anyone... But at least some explanations
