So you were right about the seaweed in the end. The man who was poisoned usually ate the seaweed, but not in the winter when it was not in season (and it is currently winter in our story). The brother had the seaweed imported from a place farther south (where they don't eat it) but where it was still in season, but since they don't eat it in the south they didn't know you had to preserve it in lime water to get the poison out...they salted it instead before shipping it out.
